The Open Water Course
PADI’s open water course is the most popular one and widely recognized scuba diving certification. As you take this course, you can become a certified diver in as little as four days, or over a course of a year. Do not think this is just a certificate to dip into the water, it is beyond learning and exploring the underwater world safely. The certification offers a great way for you to connect with the natural world.
As you finish your PADI certification course, you will understand the marine planet in a new way. There are the following phases in the PADI Open Water Course:
Phase 1: Knowledge Development
You should be more than 10 years old, should be able to swim, and should be in good physical condition to enroll for this scuba diving course. During this phase, you will learn about scuba equipment, familiarize yourself with scuba terminology, and you will be asked to watch scuba diving videos. It is sort of a self-study and you can take your time to go through everything at your pace.
Phase 2: Confined water dives
As phase 1 is completed, you will be asked to take your first breath in a calm environment, such as a tranquil lagoon or a swimming pool. Here, you will practice basic diving skills such as clearing water from your mask, ascending and descending, and so on.
Phase 3: Open water dives
Once you are comfortable performing in the confined water dives, you will be taken to the ocean and you can dive up to a maximum depth of 18 meters. The open water course includes four open dives in total and it is usually done over two days.
Once you complete all three phases of learning, you become a certified diver – a title that will last with you for a lifetime. With this certificate in hand, you are free to explore the other two-thirds of our ocean planet.
