Cleaning and Maintaining Bongs: Effective Methods and Essential Tips

Using bongs to smoke weed is a great idea for those who want a smooth and flavorful hit. As exciting as it sounds, cleaning your bong can get pretty hectic. The dirt, tar, and debris accumulated from the burning weed can make your bong look dirty. Not just that, but the excess dirt accumulation can ruin the taste of the hit.

To make the best of your smoking experience and enjoy the flavors to their fullest, it’s advisable to clean your bong every few days using special cleaning supplies. In this post, we’ll walk you through some easy and effective ways of cleaning bongs—using at-home remedies or professional cleaning supplies. Keep reading.

Gathering Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning your bong is not just for aesthetic purposes, but it prevents you from getting sick due to smoking dirt. It also enhances the product’s lifespan. If you have one bong, you can’t use it if it’s collected a considerable amount of debris. Fortunately, there are some premium bong cleaners that can give you crystal-clear glass. Cleaning supplies include coarse salt, alcohol, or a commercial cleaner.

Preparing the Bong for Cleaning

To get easy and quick access to the hard-to-reach parts of your bong, disassemble it. Remove the removable parts, such as the downstem and bowl. The next step is to drain the dirty water. Pour the dirty water out of the bong and rinse it with warm water so that the residue (liquid and solid) is removed.

Cleaning Methods for Bongs

As mentioned earlier, you can clean it with bong cleaners or DIY cleaning detergents. Both work well, but if it’s accumulated a lot of debris and resin, it’s best to stick to the ready-made bong cleaning solutions. They are highly effective.

Method 1: Basic Cleaning

If you are giving it a routine wash, just take the bowl and downstem out of the bong and rinse each part thoroughly with warm water. You can use regular cleaning detergent to wash the inner part and the exteriors thoroughly. Apply the solution using a microfiber cloth and wash it with clean water. Once you are done cleaning it with soap, rinse it again with warm water to remove any residue from the detergent.

Method 2: Salt and Alcohol Cleaning

Another popular method that gives a clear glass is the combination of alcohol and salt. If you are using glass bongs, alcohol is the ideal solution to get rid of all the bacteria and germs from the bowl. Use Isopropyl alcohol (preferably 99% pure) to kill the contaminants and clean the bong thoroughly from all corners. It works well on glass bongs or any glass product that’s contaminated with solid or wet debris. It can break down the debris, giving your bong a perfect clean.

Once you have poured the alcohol, put some salt in the mix to get the debris off the glass easily. You don’t need to do any scrubbing or harsh cleaning, nor are the salt and alcohol cleaning associated with a waiting period. You can just pour the solution into the bowl, shake it a little bit, wipe the stained spots gently, and you are good to go. Make sure you apply enough salt to remove the stubborn resin buildup.

Method 3: Commercial Bong Cleaners

You can find many commercial bong cleaners that are designed for glass bongs and water chambers that are filled with a lot of filth. If the bong doesn’t respond to the natural cleaning solutions or the alcohol, you can buy a commercial cleaner. It offers quick results and leaves no residue behind. Depending on the products, they can be alcohol-free or a combination of coarse salt and alcohol.

They also contain resin-melting compounds that can take the dirt off fairly quickly. The application procedure is mentioned on the label. Usually, you just need to pour a few drops of the formula into the bong and wait for a few minutes. The resin will automatically be removed and come up on the surface. You can then wash it with warm water. A few commonly used bong cleaners are Formula 420 Original Cleaner, Grunge Off, Orange Chronic, and Randy’s Black Label.

Method 4: DIY Bong Cleaning Solutions

If you don’t have alcohol or commercial cleaning products, you can use household items to create a homemade cleaning formula using vinegar and baking soda. Both products are available in most kitchens, so it’s an easy hack for bong cleaning.

  1. Pour some vinegar into the bong (just like you’d add alcohol).
  2. Apply 1-2 tbsps of baking soda. It acts as an abrasive that scrubs the resin and stubborn dirt from the bowl and brings it to the surface.
  3. Cover the bong and shake it to mix the vinegar and baking soda. There’s no scrubbing needed, as you are using an abrasive. But you can wipe the stained areas if there’s too much dirt.
  4. Leave it for the next 30-45 minutes.
  5. Shake it one more time and then pour the solution out
  6. Wash the bong with warm water to remove any residue

Likewise, you can wash the downstem and bowl. In a bowl, mix vinegar and baking soda and put these two parts in it for 30-45 minutes. Remove any dirt manually before washing them with warm water.

Cleaning Accessories and Difficult Areas

A bong has an intricate design and narrow space, making cleaning a little tricky. It gets even more challenging if you are doing the basic cleaning with a scrub. If you are having difficulty cleaning certain parts, use a flexible pipe to get to these areas. If the residue doesn’t come out after thorough cleaning, mix lemon juice with warm water and pour it into the bong to loosen the dirt. You can also use cotton swabs to give it a good wash.

Conclusion

These were some easy and effective ways to clean bongs. Whichever method you choose, make sure you rinse the bong and all the disassembled parts with warm water to remove the residue of the dirt and the cleaning formula. Hope it helps.
