Clattering hooves, neighing horses and the smell of hearty food in the inns – the Cold Market in Ellwangen an der Jagst is undoubtedly one of the most traditional and fascinating events in the Swabia region. This horse market not only has a long history, but also attracts numerous horse lovers, riders, farmers and horse breeders to the city every year to take part in the “festival of festivals”. The year 2024 is no exception, and from January 7th to 10th, visitors can once again experience an exciting program. All information can be found on the website.

The oldest horse fair in Swabia
The Cold Market traditionally begins on the Sunday after the Three Kings with a solemn equestrian mass in the Basilica of St. Vitus. It is an atmospheric start to what will follow in the following days. The real highlight of the market occurs on Monday morning, when the horses are brought out and awards are given to the best mares. Which mare and team will impress the critical jury and win this year? The competition is open to all horse breeds, from woolly Icelandic horses to proud Arabians. However, only mares over the age of three can take part in the award. A notable change this year is that the show will not take place on the Schießwasen as usual, but on the site of the former barracks.

A big parade through the old town
From 2 p.m. on Monday, a magnificent parade with more than 300 dressed-up horses and teams as well as numerous guards and music bands moves through the historic city center. The little Shettys with their original braided hairstyles are often the audience's favorites. The parade is traditionally led by the Citizens' Guard in historical costumes, followed by the winning mares, who receive their winner's ribbons in front of the music school.

Not just horses – exhibitions and markets
However, the Cold Market offers visitors more than just horses. Various exhibitions such as “House, Garden, Agriculture” or the Ellwanger technology fair begin on Sunday on the former construction site in Mühlgraben. Visitors have the opportunity to find out more and discover new things here until Wednesday. Another highlight is the large grocery and organic market on Wednesday, where market suppliers from all over Germany offer their goods and many culinary delicacies from the region can be tasted. Traditionally, the cold market ends on Wednesday with the farmers' rally in the town hall and the grocer and organic market in the city center.

The cold market in Ellwangen an der Jagst is undoubtedly an unforgettable experience that not only delights horse lovers, but also offers a great opportunity to experience the regional culture and traditions. For anyone who wants to experience the fascination of horses and the atmosphere of a traditional horse market, the Cold Market is an absolute must.
