The pivotal role of the digital economy and ICT sector in propelling economic growth, job creation, and enhancing regional competitiveness cannot be overstated, the report emphasizes. With the increasing global demand for digital services and technologies, CEE nations, comprising EU members from Central and Southeast Europe, boasting a collective population of nearly 100 million people and contributing 12.3% of EU GDP, have emerged as significant players in the digital marketplace. Despite remarkable progress, the report identifies several challenges impeding the full realization of CEE’s digital potential. These include lower labor productivity in the ICT sector, disparities in digitization levels among enterprises and individuals, and varying performance on the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI). Nevertheless, CEE countries are strategically positioned to capitalize on emerging trends such as artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and cloud technology, which are poised to shape the digital economy’s future.
