Central and Eastern Europe’s Digital Ascent

A recent report jointly authored by PwC and the CEE Digital Coalition underscores the burgeoning potential of Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries to fortify and advance their Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sectors, potentially shaping the region into the European Union’s Silicon Valley equivalent. Highlighting a striking contrast between CEE nations and their Western European counterparts across various digital metrics, the report underscores a notable uptick in digital businesses’ presence and a burgeoning workforce engaged in the sector within the CEE region. Furthermore, significant investments in research and technological innovation have positioned CEE nations at the forefront of digital advancement, according to the report titled “The ICT sector in the CEE countries as a regional driver of growth.”

Flourishing Digital Economies Amidst Challenges

The pivotal role of the digital economy and ICT sector in propelling economic growth, job creation, and enhancing regional competitiveness cannot be overstated, the report emphasizes. With the increasing global demand for digital services and technologies, CEE nations, comprising EU members from Central and Southeast Europe, boasting a collective population of nearly 100 million people and contributing 12.3% of EU GDP, have emerged as significant players in the digital marketplace. Over the years, the region has showcased faster growth rates compared to Western EU’s Tech Hub, propelled by the rapid development of its ICT sector, as evidenced by a significant surge in ICT goods exports and job creation.

Navigating Challenges and Embracing Opportunities

Despite remarkable progress, the report identifies several challenges impeding the full realization of CEE’s digital potential. These include lower labor productivity in the ICT sector, disparities in digitization levels among enterprises and individuals, and varying performance on the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI). Nevertheless, CEE countries are strategically positioned to capitalize on emerging trends such as artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and cloud technology, which are poised to shape the digital economy’s future. The report advocates for strategic measures, including fostering regional cooperation, attracting investments, nurturing startups, and establishing a balanced regulatory framework, to propel the region’s digital transformation forward.

A Path to Sustainable Growth

As Central and Eastern EU’s Tech Hub charts its course towards becoming the EU’s tech hub, concerted efforts aimed at addressing existing challenges and seizing emerging opportunities will be paramount. By leveraging the region’s growing pool of digital talent, fostering innovation ecosystems, and embracing transformative technologies, CEE nations can pave the way for sustainable economic growth, enhanced competitiveness, and prosperity in the digital age.
