What Are Bone Screws?

Bone screws are orthopedic medical devices that are used during the surgical treatment of fractures. They hold fractured bone fragments in correct alignment through compression. Orthopedic screws have spiral threads along their shaft that create torsional force when applied. The force is then converted into compression to fix fractured fragments in place. 

The mechanical principle used by bone screws is similar to that of other screws. 

What Are the Parts of Bone Screws?

The bone screw is a cylinder-shaped instrument that has three components:

Head

The head serves as a buttress that prevents the complete sinking of the screw during insertion. It also has a corresponding hole to the screwdriver that makes insertion easy. Heads are available in different designs:

  • Star-shaped
  • Hexagonal
  • Philips Screw

Shaft

The shaft is the middle and longest part of the screw. It has a core and spiral threads that move around the shaft’s core along its length. The pitch of the thread can be big or small depending on the type of screw. This also increases or decreases the number of threads accordingly. 

Tip 

The tip is required to tap the hole when the screw is inserted into the bone. The shape of the tip also varies according to the type of screw. In self-tapping screws, the tip can tap its hole during insertion. While on the other hand, while applying non-self-tapping screws, a pre-drilled hole corresponding to the threads of the screw is required. 

What Are the Materials Used to Manufacture Orthopedic Screws?

Both metals and non-metals are used for the manufacturing of bone screws. Here are the common materials to produce orthopedic screws:

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel screws are the most commonly used orthopedic screws and are available in different sizes. 

Titanium

Titanium is the best alloy for manufacturing orthopedic implants. Titanium-made screws are ideal for the treatment of mandibular fractures. The rate of infection with titanium screws is less when compared to stainless steel screws.

Bioabsorbable Screws

The materials used to manufacture bioabsorbable screws are polyglycolic acid, poly-L-lactic acid, and polylactic acid. These screws get absorbed in the body over time and hence, there is no need to remove them after the fracture has healed.

  • Lag screws
