UGC NET is a National Eligibility Test conducted by National Testing Agency every year to identify the candidates who are eligible for the prestigious Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) as well as the Assistant Professors post in central universities.

Previously the notification for UGC NET JRF, June 2023 was released on 10th of May 2023. The online application process began on that day and continued until 31st of May 2023.

The UGC NET Phase 1 Exam was held from 13th June to 17th of June 2023. The exam for Phase II is scheduled to take place between 19th and 22nd of June 2023.

UGC NET Full Form

NTA stands for National Testing Agency, which is the full name of the National Testing Agency. It conducts national examinations on behalf of UGC (University Grants Commission).

The NET exam which is known as National Eligibility Test is held for the recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor or award JRF which means Junior Research Fellowship to selected candidates.

NTA UGC NET Exam Overview

In 1956 in 1956, the Indian Government set up UGC in 1956. UGC as a statutory organization.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is a part of the UGC is the body that conducts an exam on a national scale and is also known in”the” UGC NET. It first began in 1989–1990 and includes the subjects of 81.

The test is conducted two times a year, normally between June and December. Every cycle, greater than five lakh applicants participate.

This test is designed to identify those who are suitable for the position of Assistant Professor or the awarding of a Junior Research Fellowship.

JRF is a letter that’s issued to candidates who have scored higher or equal marks. JRF is a letter sent to applicants who scored more or less scores than the JRF cutoffs in their NTA NETs for the subjects they studied.

UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2024

The notification about the UGC NET Eligibility Criteria June 2024 is expected to be released during the month of March in 2024. It will provide the latest updates on the eligibility requirements.

To prepare for this test, you may want to review the criteria for the previous UGC NET exam cycle.

Before you begin, it is important to note that only Indian citizens can take the UGC NET examination.

1) Age Eligibility

You must be under 31 years old on the 1st of the month that the UGC NET JRF Exam Registration Process would be completed, i.e. 01.06.2024. (This applies only to the current examination).

There is no age limit for assistant professorships (AP).

2) Educational Qualification for UGC NET (General)

  • Candidates must have a minimum 55% mark in their Master’s degree OR equivalent examination in Humanities, Social Science (including languages), Computer Science & Applications and Electronic Science.
  • If you are a candidate from SC/ST/OBC/PWD/transgender category, then the minimum score to be obtained is 50% marks.

UGC NET Syllabus 2024

The syllabus for UGC NET comprises of two papers:

  • Paper 1
  • Paper 2

The paper 2 will be different for every subject. Paper 2 will have questions that are specific to the chosen subject by the candidate.

UGC NET Exam Pattern

If you want to pass the UGC NET in June 2024, it is crucial that you know the exam pattern. Below are the details of the UGC examination pattern.

UGC NET Exam consists of two papers, as mentioned earlier. The first paper is a general/common paper and the second paper is a topic-specific paper.

There is no break in between the two papers, so the time allocated to complete the two papers is 3 hour. The candidate is responsible for managing his time accordingly between the two papers.

Candidates are advised to spend more time on Paper 2 than Paper 1 because it contains more questions.

The marking scheme does not include negative marking for either paper.

The exam pattern of both papers is different

  • Paper 1 is the same for everyone and has 50 questions.
  • The second paper is and has a total 100 questions.
