ERCP, or Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography, is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat issues in the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts. During the procedure, a flexible tube with a camera called an endoscope is inserted through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the stomach and small intestine. This allows the doctor to see the ducts on a monitor.
Once the ducts are visible, contrast dye is injected to make them stand out on X-rays. This helps the doctor identify any blockages, stones, or other abnormalities. If a blockage or stone is found, the doctor can often remove it using special tools passed through the endoscope.
