How Do ANC Headphones Work?

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) headphones use a combination of microphones and software to block unwanted sound before it reaches the user's ears. This technology is designed to work well in environments with lots of background noise. For example, ANC headphones can be used to reduce engine noise on a plane or bus, or to help you relax and focus in a noisy office. The downside of ANC is that it can produce unwanted feedback, and it can affect the quality of your music.

The most important thing to understand about ANC is that it doesn't block out all sounds. For instance, your neighbor's music isn't going to go away. Instead, a microphone picks up and translates the noise into low-frequency waves, which travel through space. These lightwaves are usually red or blue. By focusing on a specific frequency, the waveforms are able to cancel out unwanted noise.

ANC headphones are comfortable, lightweight, and generally provide high-quality sound. However, they do consume more battery power than conventional headphones. If you don't want to hear anything but your own voice during a phone call, you can set the ANC to the 'Transport' mode. Alternatively, you can turn it off completely.

The best ANC headphones aren't always the cheapest. Some headphones, such as the Jabra Elite 85t, feature three microphones in each earbud. Others, like the Sony WF-1000XM4, feature a beam-forming mic. Each of these headsets uses a different technique to achieve the most effective level of noise cancelling.

The most common type of ANC, feedforward, is a simple system that works by listening to external noise. Once a signal has been detected, it uses digital processing to correct for the tone shifts. Adaptive equalization is another form of ANC. Using an inward-facing microphone, the device determines the volume of your ambient noise and adjusts the level of EQ accordingly.

Hybrid ANC is a more advanced type of ANC. It utilizes both feedforward and adaptive equalization to improve noise cancellation. Hybrid ANC is more expensive and requires more powerful processing hardware. Nonetheless, the benefit of hybrid ANC is that it can better handle a wide range of noises, including high-frequency sounds and lower-frequency noises.

There are a lot of ANC headphones on the market, but only a few make good ones. Ultimately, it comes down to your personal preference and price point. To get the best noise cancelling performance, look for a pair that offers both a lightweight and secure fit. You can also choose to buy active noise cancelling earbuds, which tend to offer greater sensitivity and noise blocking capabilities than traditional headphones.

In addition to noise cancelling, active noise cancellation headphones can help you focus on a task, whether you're on a bus or train, working on a computer, or relaxing at home. As an added bonus, most ANC headsets offer a durable case that's waterproof and made of aluminium. Several models come with a companion app for controlling the EQ and setting presets.
