How do I get my new BECU debit card activated?
5 min read

We frequently sneak a peek at the projects our members are working on, and we found this beauty from the clever people at the interactive agency Possible, who redesigned the BECU (Boeing Employee's Credit Union) website (www.becu.org).

The purpose of their project was to provide an answer to a single question: "What do we call the place where our website visitors go to do them...you know...thingamybob banking that you do when you don't do it at one of the BECU Online Banking Neighborhood Financial Centers?"

In order to obtain precisely that one response, a very straightforward project was designed. What they did was create and host five distinct high-fidelity wireframe designs of the BECU homepage on a staging server. Except for the label for this unnamed section of the website, all three designs were identical. The first design put the link in the primary navigation, not the utility navigation at the top, and the final design put it in the footer.

The following were the alternative sections' names:

  • Remote Account • Access Mobile and Online Banking • Remote Banking • Online Banking (for the one in the footer) Five distinct projects were set up so that there was no bias in the order in which tasks were completed and the tasks were written the same way for each project:

"Find out how to view your banking information on your internet-enabled cell phone by using the site."

During the evaluation, participants were presented with the screen below when they selected a link that did not take them to the "correct" location. This is especially helpful because navigating through a wireframed website where only the home page serves any useful purpose could have been disastrously confusing for participants.

Again, the same four follow-up questions were asked for each project. They included

  1. How challenging was it to finish this task?
  2. How confident were you that clicking on the link labeled "[Name of the section]" would lead you to the information you were looking for?
  3. When you click on "Name of the section," what specific information can you anticipate seeing?
  4. What, if anything, would be a more appropriate title or description for this data?

Overall, a cost-effective, quick, and easy way to get a precise link label for a growing section of their website.
