How our Healthcare System is Failing to Acknowledge the Growing Threat: Post-COVID-19?

3 min read

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the established system and brought problems for the entire healthcare system such as accessibility, abnormal prices and costs, improper quality, lack of information, research on the after-effects of disease, prevalent biases and disparities, and diminishing public health. Our private healthcare system has not been well equipped and resourced to combat disease effectively. Many developed countries face economic turmoil and fluctuations in many rigid systems that could have backed the whole system.

Our healthcare system is one complex industry, when COVID-19 was first declared in 2019, the whole industry was disrupted, and were not able to make decisions instantly because of a lack of understanding and research. The situation got worse when COVID-19 mutated and struck back stronger. But the damage was done when the first wave hit.

The healthcare system failed to recognize the actual problem, that is the intricacies that occurred post-COVID disease. It’s time to learn about the growing threat, after contracting the disease, a patient goes through a lot and their neurological system gets affected. This piece of information is not disclosed by any authority because people are suffering from the long-term effects of COVID-19.

Through recent analysis, it came to our knowledge that even after the COVID-19 pandemic people who contracted the disease have a chance to develop neurological complications, increasing in significant proportion. The concern is becoming apparent that neurological complications could occur even in those with mild COVID-19 infection.

Our medical institute and healthcare system are not acknowledging this fact because of that people are unable to take it seriously. The current study shows that in the blood samples from 800 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 across England, 50% of patients had neurologic conditions. Their blood levels had inflammatory proteins (cytokines), antibodies, and brain (neuroglial) injury proteins. It can be found in the early recovery stage, which is less than 6 weeks post-infection, these symptoms begin to elevate in patients during recovery, with no difference between those who had or had not experienced the neurological disorder. After six weeks, symptoms will only be seen in patients who suffered neurological symptoms in the acute stage of the ailment.

Even after years, our healthcare system is unable to recover entirely from the pandemic as it requires restructuring the whole system to be better prepared to manage disease even after the pandemic as traditional ways can significantly damage the care quality and capacity for patients, which is why public healthcare system needs to be repaired and enhance their strategies to combat disease like COVID-19. It can be through management, protection, containment, information, and support.

We recommend people learn further about how it affects our brain, the harm it can cause, and much more insightful in-depth knowledge in the book “Long Haul COVID is Brain Injury”, written by Laurel Hare. The Book is elaborated in a way that you must have a proper understanding of the growing threat. The author is trying to bring awareness about the flawed healthcare system and why you should be acknowledged.
