But why is it so difficult to achieve a goal on many occasions? Perhaps because we are all human and can be distracted, however it has been proven that a good part of the time, the incorrect definition of goals is the main responsible for failure.
The way you formulate how to achieve a goal is just as important as its content. The recommendations are to use the right words, put them in perspective, set realistic dates, and do it in a way that we can easily measure its positive results.
But defining the goals you want to achieve is only the first part of a long road, in which you will have to use your perseverance and resilience. To make it easier for you to achieve a goal that you set for yourself, no matter what it is, we share some recommendations with you.
- Part of general goals. Before considering how to reach a new goal, perhaps it is important that you ask yourself: how do you want your life to be? And how does this fit with that vision? Setting goals should be part of your life journey, it should be relevant and meaningful to you. So you should consider: how do you want to spend your waking hours, what excites you in life, what areas do you want to spend time learning more about, and what kind of people do you want to hang out with?
- Put your goals on paper. Writing down your goals will force you to crystallize what exactly you hope to achieve. This simple act has a way of making your goal stick in your mind and your brain working on the details to make it happen. One study found that you are 42% more likely to achieve what you set out to do if you write it down.
- Brainstorm. Now that you are clear about the goals you want to achieve, start planning what needs to happen to achieve that vision. Identify the main steps and tasks you need to accomplish along the way. Are there certain steps you need to prioritize? Are there time sensitive tasks that must be accomplished in a certain order? Start determining what needs to happen and when.
- Generate an action plan. You need a road map that you can follow and that will lead you to meet first one goal, then another, and so on until you reach your goal. By doing this, the ultimate end will seem less daunting and more attainable. Be specific about what you want to achieve in each step.
- Make it measurable. Along with your action plan, you should set benchmarks for yourself to ensure that each step you take is steadily building toward the bigger picture. You'll need to set goals and make each mini-goal measurable, so you know when you're getting off track. This means setting deadlines that are reasonable, but also move you forward.
- Take action! There is no time like the present. You have to start somewhere, so dig in, find your courage, and go for it. If you don't take action, you will never reach your goals. It can seem scary to take that first step. Maybe you're still working out the details or you're worried you're not ready. Jump up and you will start solving the obstacles as you go.
- Consider your talents and experience. Consider the skills and tools you need to accomplish each of the tasks that make up your larger goal. This includes taking a look at your strengths and weaknesses. Do you have the necessary skills and experience to carry out all the steps?
- Delegate less important tasks. If you want to achieve a big goal or far-reaching dream, you will probably need help to achieve it. It's important to build a complementary team and surround yourself with supportive people to help you achieve your goals. Do you have helpers or employees to whom you can hand off tasks? What about hiring a freelancer? Focus as much as you can on the areas where your skills are strongest, and find ways to delegate or seek help in those areas where you are weakest.
- Build a success mindset. The success or failure in reaching your goals is often determined by your mindset. A positive mindset is a “success mindset”, which means that you are sure of yourself but are also capable of learning from mistakes.
- Take responsibility. This is the part where you grow up, define your responsibilities, and explain to yourself (and anyone else on this adventure with you) what your responsibilities are to reaching the goal you set for yourself.
- Find your inner motivation. You can keep your motivation high by setting goals that are achievable and relevant to you and your life. Make sure they are meaningful, realistic, and timely, and they will help keep you encouraged and give you an incentive to keep going. The best goals are those that connect with your intrinsic motivation; in other words, they are things that you feel motivated to follow from the depths of your desires.
- Tap into your inner worker bee. Reaching a goal will require you to sharpen your good habits and meet your responsibilities. Success doesn't happen overnight, it's about making it happen, day after day. Developing good habits and learning techniques to be productive will help you stick to your plan. Healthy habits like getting enough sleep, eating right, and taking care of yourself will give you the energy and stamina you need. Productivity habits, such as learning to prioritize tasks, work efficiently, and stay focused, will make it much easier to reach your goals.
- Seek feedback. Feedback is essential to improve your performance and increase your ability to achieve a goal. You have one perspective, but those around you may have another. Seek advice from those you respect and trust. Seek constructive criticism and listen to what others are saying: the good and the bad. Feedback is the cheapest and most powerful way to gauge how other people perceive how you are doing. It is an important tool to assess how well you are meeting the standards you set.
- Evaluate how the plan is working. As you start to make progress toward a goal, take the time to follow up on how things are going: is the plan working? Can you meet the deadlines and milestones you've set? Periodically reassess your goals, identify where you are falling behind, and begin to adjust accordingly.
- Rephrase if necessary. Remember that change is a part of life, and that means you have to be flexible. You may need a back-up plan if things are not going as they should. Don't get so focused on your goals that you forget what your bigger vision is. Is it time to make some radical changes and alter your course? If so, better do it now and not when it's too late.
