How to manually calculate body mass index?
3 min read

The body mass index (BMI) of a person can be calculated by multiplying their weight in kilogrammes (or pounds) by their height in metres (or feet), squared. Increased body fatness may be indicated by a high BMI. The BMI measures weight categories that may be associated with health issues but does not make a body fat or health diagnosis. Everything may be calculated using the BMI Calculator.

Calculate Your Body Mass Index

Adult men and women can use the body mass index (BMI), a measurement of body fat based on height and weight.

  • Type in your height and weight in either standard or metric units.
  • Your BMI will be displayed below when you choose to "Compute BMI".

The Standard and New BMI Formulas

  • The new BMI is 1.3 times weight (kg)/height (m).
  • Weight (kg)/Height (m)2 is the standard BMI.
  • Adult BMI Weight Status Categories

BMI Categories:

  • Normal weight is 18.5-24.9
  • Overweight is 25-29.9
  • Underweight is 18.5;
  • BMI of 30 or above equates to obesity

How can I determine my BMI risk level?

  • Use a scale on a solid, level, carpet-free surface. Wear no shoes and very little clothing.
  • Calculate your weight to the nearest pound.
  • Face a wall and stand up straight, your heels touching. Your eyes should be front. Your head, shoulders, and back should all be in contact with the wall.
  • At the top of your head, record your height. Next, calculate your height in feet and inches, rounding up to the next quarter inch. Your height should only be calculated in inches.
  • In the first column of the Body Mass Index Risk Levels table, you may find your height in feet and inches. For each height, the three columns display the weight ranges associated with low risk, moderate risk (overweight), and high risk (obesity).

Is there ever a situation where BMI isn't the best indicator?

Other body composition measurements, such as body measurements (waist, hip, arm, and thigh) or skinfold thickness using callipers, may be more informative than BMI Calculator  for assessing the health risks associated with a person's weight in athletes or those who routinely engage in strenuous activities. It can be challenging to obtain body measurements consistently from one person to the next, so it's ideal to have these measurements taken by a licenced healthcare practitioner.
