How Whisky is Made

Whisky is one of the world’s most popular and sought-after drinks. It’s an old drink that has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, as more people become interested in learning about its production process. Whisky is made from a variety of ingredients, but at its heart, it’s a spirit that is distilled from fermented grain mash. In this blog post, we will explore the process by which whisky is made and what goes into making it one of the world’s most beloved beverages.

How whisky is made

Whisky is a type of liquor made from fermented grain mash. The grains are malted, which is when they are soaked in hot water and then dried. They are then steeped in alcohol for a period of time, usually around 12-14 days. This process produces malt whisky, which is the most common type of whisky. Blend whisky refers to a mixture of malt and other spirit types, such as vodka or gin. Rye whisky is made from a higher percentage of rye grain than any other type of whisky.

Types of whisky

Whisky is a distilled beverage made from fermented Grain Whisky that are usually barley, rye, or malt. The mash is cooked with water and often with other ingredients such as yeast, sugar, and spices. The heated vapors are then drawn off through a condenser and boiled again to drive off the alcohol. This second boiling is called "mashing in." The whisky is then put into barrels to age for up to three years.

How to taste whisky

Whisky is traditionally made from a blend of grains like barley, corn, and rye. The mixture is then distilled using steam or hot water. This process separates the alcohol from the other liquids and leaves whisky behind.

How whisky is aged

The barrels used for whisky production are typically new, but some are re-used. Oak barrels are chosen for their ability to hold a precise amount of whisky and also because they impart flavors to the spirit that can develop over time. The first step in whisky production is to put the whisky into these barrels.

Oak contains compounds called terpenes which contribute to the flavor of whisky. Over time, these terpenes will mingle with the other compounds in the barrel, resulting in complex flavors that vary from one batch of whisky to another.

To prevent oxidation, the whiskey is left untouched for a minimum of two years and a maximum of 10 years. This period of time allows all of the flavors to meld together and develop into something unique and special.

Afterwards, the whisky is taken out of the barrel and poured into brand new bottles or casks. This process is called "rebottling." The newly distilled whisky is now ready for sale!
