Toilet Talk: Best Podcasts to Listen to While on the Loo
6 min read

Where there is poop, there should be a podcast. Sometimes it can feel lonely on the throne, which is why many of us seek to be entertained through literature, social media, or, more recently, podcasts.

Over 19.1 million Brits listen to podcasts; they offer the opportunity to listen, learn, and laugh, and the format of podcasts means we can enjoy them from anywhere. Yes, including the bathroom!

If you’re looking for new suggestions that will make your time on the toilet that little bit more valuable, stick around. Oceans have put together their top podcast recommendations ideal while on the loo. Make sure you stock up on the toilet paper!

Comedy

Take the term “sh*ts and giggles” quite literally by enjoying podcasts of the comedic genre while you do your business in the bathroom. And hey, if you do wet yourself from all the laughing, you’ll be in the perfect place!

Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe's Parenting Hell – This could be the perfect podcast for all parents out there. While you’re getting a bit of time to yourself (a rare occasion!) on the loo, listen to comedians Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe share their hilarious tales of parenting woes.

Nearlyweds by Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo – Whether you’re planning a wedding yourself, or just fancy a chuckle while unbuckled, join Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo as they discuss each element of getting married and all the pre-wedding banter that comes with it.

Help I Sexted My Boss by William Hanson and Jordan North The bathroom can be a very thought-provoking place, so a podcast dedicated to finding solutions to everyday problems (in the most uproarious of ways) is a perfect match!

All three of these shows have a rating above 4.7 (out of five) on Rephonic, but you can always look at the top 40 UK comedy podcasts if those don’t tickle your ribs enough!

True crime

When we feel anxious, the nerves in our digestive tract begin to contract rapidly, which can bring on the urge to poop. In that case, true crime podcasts are perfect to listen to while on the loo! And if you do hear something particularly chilling that sets that tract off, you’re good to go. Literally.

RedHanded by Hannah Maguire and Suruthi Bala – This award-winning show explores serial kills, hauntings, disturbing mysteries, and more. With almost 300 episodes to date, you’re covered for quite a few number twos.

They Walk Among Us by Benjamin and Rosanna FittonThis husband-and-wife duo are the real MVPs when it comes to sharing hair-raising stories that have us questioning who and what we know. Listen to the surreal and the sinister on your next toilet break.

The Missing by Pandora Sykes According to the charity Missing People, someone is reported missing every 90 seconds in the UK. While many are found quite quickly, journalist Pandora Sykes uses her podcast to explore the cases of those missing long-term. Can you help solve a real-life crime from the toilet seat?

10 minutes and under

As it stands, the typical podcast is 38 minutes long. While it is an option to simply stop your chosen episode when you’re done on the loo, and pick it up again when you’re next available to, you might instead wish for shorter episodes to accommodate your poops.

Your wish is our command. Here are some popular podcasts only 10 minutes or less in length.

Seven Minute Explainers by The Week – Informative and entertaining, The Week’s incredibly talented writers and editors explain various topics – including the TV show Friends, how to avoid being eaten by a shark, and North Korea’s growing nuclear threat – in seven minutes or less. That’s an impressive range.

50 Things That Made the Modern Economy by Tim Harford – Listen to the fascinating stories behind fifty concepts that changed life as we know it. Tim Harford of the BBC World Service will walk you through inventions and innovations that have contributed to the modern economy, including the toilet’s trusted s-bend!

History in Five Minutes by Michael Rank – Class yourself as quite the historian? Do a spot of time travelling on your next bathroom break by listening to historian and writer Michael Rank discuss key moments, events, and personalities throughout history.

Toilet-specific podcasts

Where better to discuss toilets than while on the toilet? As of January 2023, there are currently over 3.02 million podcasts, so it should come as no surprise that there are actually quite a few that discuss the topic of toilets and what we do while on one.

SHHH: The Poopcast by Shawn Shafner – There is such a stigma around pooping and various other toilet behaviours and habits, and Shawn Shafner (aka ‘The Puru’) uses his podcast to break down the walls. Join him for serious (but entertaining) lessons on poop, faecal matters, and various other taboo topics.

Let’s Talk About Toilets by Gabrielle Sierra – In this special episode of Why It Matters, experts get together to examine why 55 per cent of the global population lacks access to safe sanitation, and why there is no quick-fix solution to this serious problem. It’ll certainly open your eyes!

The Poo Crew by David E Thorp – Is it possible to make the topic of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) funny? Well, friends David and Griff give it a good go as they discuss constipation, stomach cramps, and various other random topics, including Star Wars and music. Enjoy 31 episodes from the comfort of your toilet seat.

No more sitting in silence

The average Brit spends 3.5 hours per week on the toilet, which is a staggering 182 hours per year! Instead of scrolling aimlessly through social media, or reading the back of shampoo bottles, put on a podcast and allow yourself this precious time to be entertained, educated, or excited. It’s there for the taking, so make the most of it while you shi-
