What Signifies Good Nutrition for Children?

Nutrition for children is based on some basic principles. The key to providing the best nutrition is an appropriate balanced and healthy diet along with some exercise. Nutrition is focused on the food groups that can be a good start to any child's diet. The nutrition based on the food groups includes the following:

  • Grain

Grains are divided into two basic categories: refined and whole grains. Refined grains are processed and milled to improve their texture and shelf life. But to make this improvement, the process of refined grains loses much of its nutritional value. Comparatively, whole grain includes brown rice, whole-wheat flour, and oatmeal. Unlike refined grains, whole grains are more nutritious and add significant value to a healthy diet.

  • Vegetables

Vegetables are one of the most nutritious ingredients that can be consumed. These are divided into subcategories of beans and peas, starchy vegetables, red and orange vegetables, dark-green vegetables, and other vegetables. The vegetables can be mashed, juiced, whole, canned, dehydrated, cooked, or consumed raw.

  • Dairy and Protein

The food group dairy and protein are children's primary sources of protein. They include nuts, seafood, eggs, peas, beans, poultry, and meat. The lean and low-fat diet can include poultry and meat sources for children. Dairy involves cheese, yoghurt, and milk. Children who are lactose intolerant or prefer vegan options can go for nut cheeses, cashew, almond, and soy milk.

  • Fruits

Fruits can be consumed in the same way that vegetables are. Unlike vegetables, fruits have a high sugar content, and therefore, for children, it is necessary to have a good dietary balance based on the time of day, activity levels, and age. Generally, it is preferred to consume fresh fruits before sunset for better absorption of nutrients by the body.
