Researchers, including academics, researchers, scientists, research engineers, or other skilled research technology specialists, are able to temporarily move to the UK under the Tier 5 (Sponsored Researcher) Government Authorized Exchange (GAE) scheme and are hosted at a UK higher education institution (HEI).

For those who wish to visit the UK for a brief period of time, a Tier 5 visa is a temporary work visa. There are six different kinds, including charitable, religious, creative and athletic, and youth mobility programs.

The primary types let you participate in an exchange program, a research fellowship, training, or work experience. To apply, you must not be from the EEA or Switzerland. Tier 5 visa holders may stay in the UK for up to the shorter of i)12 or 24 months (depending on the scheme they apply for) or ii)the time specified on their certificate of sponsorship plus 28 days. It is not possible to use the Tier 5 visa to start a permanent work in the UK.

Any of the following can serve as your sponsor:

  2. A facility for higher education (if you are a sponsored researcher, visiting academic or examiner)
  3. A department or body of the government.

Length of time

Up to three months prior to the day you are scheduled to begin employment in the UK, you may apply for a visa. Your sponsorship certificate includes this date.

You must present identification documentation and supporting documentation as part of your application.

If you need to make an appointment to do this, you might need to allow more time. If one is required, you'll learn about it when you begin your application.

A decision on your visa is often made within: Once you've submitted an online application, verified your identification, and presented your papers.

  2. If you're in the UK, 8 weeks

If you have an appointment to keep, you might be able to pay extra for a quicker decision. Whether you're inside the UK or outside the UK will affect how you handle this.

The timeline

Departments should be informed that we need at least 2 to 3 months to process a Tier 5 CoS from the time we receive the first Tier 5 form and any further details on the research collaboration to the effective date of the person's arrival in the UK. The Compliance Team will get in touch with the person to confirm the procedure, ask for and check particular papers, and apply for a Tier 5 CoS during this period.

Once a CoS is received, the individual must submit a visa application. If a Tier 5 CoS is granted, the person will be given the CoS reference number. Using this as a guide, the person must acquire entry clearance and a Tier 5 visa prior to traveling to the UK.
