IPAF training courses have been designed by the IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) to provide MEWP training according to the Work at Height Regulations 2005. These courses are recognised internationally and considered as the gold standard of powered access equipment training.

Suppose you are a contractor planning to book an IPAF course or an employer interested in getting accredited access platform training for your employees. In that case, you might have some questions about IPAF training. To help address your queries, here are the top five frequently asked questions covering all major topics, like course structure, MEWP controls, and more.

  • How Long Is IPAF Training?

The duration of IPAF training depends on the course you book. For example, IPAF operator courses take one day to complete, such as the IPAF Demonstrator Course, MEWPs for Managers, and 3A Self-Propelled Vehicle Module. On the other hand, there is also an IPAF Instructor Training Course, a 5-day program with requirements like a minimum of 6 months experience as an IPAF operator, 3 months as an IPAF demonstrator, and 36 months experience working with powered access machines.

  • Are Controls Standardised Across Powered Access Machines?

MEWP controls typically vary across models and brands; therefore, familiarisation with the platform controls is essential for the safe operation of the machine. However, through continuous research, IPAF has been dedicated to promoting the standardisation of MEWP controls internationally since 2009. The organisation also launched a project in 2009 to determine which major platform controls must be standardised.

  • What If I Fail An IPAF Training Course?

As per IPAF’s instructions, you can retake the training and the test the following day after you fail. It might, however, be helpful for you to discuss with your trainers and manager why you failed. Their guidance could help you determine how to increase your chances of clearing the test next time.

  • What Is A PAL Card Or IPAF License?

A PAL card or Powered Access License is granted to individuals after successful completion of an IPAF course at an accredited training centre. This card is recognised internationally and demonstrates that the operator has received training to a competent level, in compliance with the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

  • How Is A PAL Card Renewed?

A PAL card is valid for 5 years and must be renewed before expiration. It can be done by completing a one-day renewal course, which includes practical and theoretical elements. To qualify for the renewal test, demonstrators and operators should have accurately completed their log books, with at least 60 entries in the last 5 years. Also, 10 of these entries should be from the final twelve months. If the demonstrators and operators fail to meet this requirement, they must retake the complete course(s).
