Children learn to read and write in kindergarten. Although some children can do this before attending kindergarten SG, it is neither necessary nor expected.

A kindergarten-ready child possesses strong preschool abilities and academic, social, and physical readiness for change. It is essential to check if your child is ready for kindergarten before sending them. The following are some signs that your child is prepared for kindergarten.

1. Academically (Pre-Reading Skills)

Pre-reading abilities prepare kids to decode words independently and comprehend what they read. They must be established before a child learns how to read.

Kids are encouraged to equip themselves with academic knowledge before entering kindergarten. Although children don't need to know how to read or write at this stage, it ensures that your child is at ease to learn something new.

Here are some examples of pre-reading skills:

  • Able to recount a basic story
  • Speaks in five- to six-word complete sentences.
  • Identifies a book's title and writes its name or recognizes the letters in the title
  • Matches rhyming sounds
  • Able to count to ten

2. Social Skills

The development of social skills is an essential aspect of childhood. Kids with strong social skills can engage pleasantly with others and successfully express their needs, wants, and emotions.

As children become older, social skills need to be continually honed. With good social skills, children develop stronger peer interactions and more academic performance in kindergarten SG.

Below are some symbols that your children are socially adapted for kindergarten:

  • Feels at ease in a crowd
  • Seeks assistance when required
  • Understands private information (name, age, gender)
  • Obeys straightforward guidelines
  • Recognizes authority
  • Capable of sharing thoughts

3. Physical Skills

The development of physical skills begins in the early years, from kicking and wriggling to gripping things, crawling, and standing. But can you tell if your children are mastering and learning adequate physical abilities for their age?

Early physical abilities grow as a result of consistent movement and activity. Each child will progress in all aspects of development, including physical development, at their rate.

The checklist of the physical skills of children are as shown below:

  • Displays fine motor abilities (holds a pencil, traces shapes, buttons shirt, etc.)
  • Shows motor coherence (rides a bike with training wheels, hops, skips)
  • Caters for bathroom needs

Wondering If Your Child Is Ready For Kindergarten?

From the points above, you may tell if your child is ready to move into a new stage. But if you are still in doubt, you will need to consider to:

  • Talk about your worries with the preschool instructor of your child.
  • Talk about your concerns with the teacher in kindergarten SG and the incoming principal.
  • Visit the school and examine a kindergarten class.
  • The best person to judge your child is you. Listen to others, consider your child, and then trust your instincts.

Final Words

You must consider the above information while deciding if your child is prepared for kindergarten. Consider your child's academic abilities and temperament. As educators and parents, our mission is to foster a balanced, supportive, and loving environment so our kids can grow and develop.

The majority of kids enter kindergarten at age 5. Consider delaying until the next academic year if your child's birthday is in the late spring or summer and they will only have just turned five at the start of the school year.
