Bike insurance is required in India to drive your two-wheeler on public roads legally. In addition to legal compliance, bike insurance provides you with a financial backup in the event of an accident. Nowadays, it is easy to get two-wheeler insurance online.

Two-wheeler insurance covers the damage of third-party property, loss of third-party life, and legal and financial liabilities caused by your two-wheeler. If you ride a bike without bike insurance, the authorities can charge you a fine to you. Make sure to go through the following details to know about fines for riding without two wheeler insurance.

Before revealing the details of fines, users must understand the rules of motor insurance in India. As stated by the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, a third-party liability policy is mandatory for riding a bike on Indian roads. However, it is best to get comprehensive bike insurance for wide coverage. It can cover third-party liabilities as well as its own damage.

Penalties for riding a two-wheeler without insurance:

You must carry all the documents such as your Driving License, Registration certificate, Pollution Under Control certificate, and active insurance documents. Traffic officials may fine you if you fail to do so.

The government has increased the penalties in the new Motor Vehicles Act, 2019. This act says you have to pay Rs. 2,000 in case of riding a two-wheeler without active insurance. This amount of fine will be charged to the people who are doing it for the first time. Also, you may have to face up to three months of imprisonment. If you get caught up for the second time, the amount of penalty will go higher. Then you have to pay Rs. 4,000. Previously, the amounts were much lesser. The penalty for the first-time offense was Rs. 1,000. And the penalty for each subsequent offense was Rs. 2,000.

The process to pay the fine:

There are two methods to pay a fine for riding a bike without insurance. You can pay offline, or you can go online.

With the offline mode, you need to go to the nearest traffic police station. Then produce the challan to verify the amount. Then you need to pay the amount and collect the payment receipt.

With an online mode, you need to go through the e-challan option of the state transport department’s official website. You need to provide the challan number and vehicle number and pay the amount through online methods. Then you can download the payment receipt.
