LulzSec Attacks Escapist Magazine, EVE Online And Minecraft

2 min read

Hacker group LulzSec, the same group that has attacked Sony and Nintendo in the past, has posted that it has committed three distributed denial of service attacks against gaming companies , shutting down EVE Online's Tranquility server, Minecraft's multiplayer services, as well as the Escapist Magazine's website. EVE Online's CCP has confirmed both the outage and the attack, the Escapist is unreachable at present and Minecraft creator Notch states that things were down, but supposedly service was restored.

LulzSec is yet to share the reason behind the attacks, but we can only speculate that it's "for teh laulz."

Update: Riot Games' League of Legends servers were also targeted by the group. The login screen for the game displays a message saying that the server is currently busy. However, the company has not yet confirmed this information.

Update: Statement from CCP after the break. EVE Online seems to still be down.

At 17:00 GMT today, CCP became aware of a distributed denial-of service (DDoS) attack against the EVE Online cluster and web servers.

Instantly, these services were taken offline. To protect themselves CCP's entire infrastructure was disconnected from the public Internet.

CCP Security is currently conducting an investigation to find out exactly what happened the incident, how it occurred and what consequences may have. We want to ensure that all personal information of our customers is safe.

More details will be made public as it's available.
