Nick Pope, Newcastle goalkeeper, has spoken out about the madness that Toon fans caused when they hijacked an online poll that put an England man the top spot on Twitter.

Toon Polls, a Newcastle fan account, has answered a Burger King online poll asking for opinions on gherkins as well as tomatoes.

The account jokingly responded to the tweet "Nick Pope" and created a viral trend that saw Easyjet, McDonalds and Amazon all tweet the name of the Magpie's summer sign.

In an interview with Sky Sports, the 30-year old explained how he was able to spot the bizarre situation and how it led to his phone being inundated with notifications.

"I thought: What's the deal? What is happening? My phone didn't stop vibrating. It's not something I am familiar with and isn't something that many people are.

'A couple of text messages were saying"What's happening? This is a bit worrying. I don't know the number of messages were sent, but it was always. It was something I am not used to and it was funny when I realized what was happening. Then, the boys began making fun of me.

Pope answered when Pope was asked which member of his team gave him the most trouble over his new fame. He said that it was the team effort in the changing rooms that caused the humiliation.

Newcastle fans began the madness by replying to an Burger King poll with Nick Pope's name

Pope joined the party by tweeting his name which became the top trending topic all over the world.

"They were able disperse it in such a way that it was across the globe. Every turn I took there was another. If it was one of the other guys, I would do the same.'

Pope's name was a top-ten popular topic in the UK and number 10 globally. McDonalds offered a free breakfast to Toon Polls if the goalie could keep a clean slate against Brighton the next day. This was something he did after Newcastle's draw without goals at The Amex Stadium.

The poll was a hit However, he wasn't the only one. The excitement generated by the tweets was also shared by Nick Pope, an Arizona-based UFO expert. It was not the first time the namesake and Nick Pope had crossed paths as the Newcastle Nick Pope explained.

Pope's clean sheet against Brighton earned the fan account a free breakfast from McDonalds

"We had a small disagreement a couple of years ago when something happened, I think he was getting hounded by opposition football fans so I had to inform people that it wasn't my fault. You never think that one day I might need some info on UFOs and at least I have a contact.'

Pope quickly settled in at St James Park, putting in impressive performances in the three initial Newcastle games.

It has led to calls for the Toon number one to be England's first choice goalie, however, he faces competition from current holder of the jersey Jordan Pickford as well as Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson.
