Quality monitoring can be performed if the reviewer is able to understand how standards should apply and the nurse being reviewed agrees to these standards. This process evaluates nursing services, patient care quality, knowledge, and behavior of nurses against established standards. This could be as simple as the way a nurse interacts with a patient upon first meeting.
A friendly, open attitude, use of appropriate language to inform, gather information, signpost and explain what and why, and allowing patients input are all signs that the nurse is able to understand and use the concept of therapeutic relationships.

The feedback and assessment would then allow the nurse to see strengths and areas for improvement. Reviewers and nurses need input about how, why, and to who peer reviewers would apply to. They should also be able to influence the selection of the reviewer. Lower suggests that they should be selected six months before the review to allow them time to observe and get to know the nurse. Peer reviewers elected on an annual basis would seem to be the fairest and most controllable process. This is an example showing how nurses have the option to choose their peers who are competent and able to judge them.
