Other Last Minute Tips from the IRS

Need more time to file? Avoid the late filing penalty if you request an extension to file your tax return. There are several ways to apply, including through the Free File link on IRS.gov, or by designating a payment as an extension payment. An extension allows additional time to file, it does not extend the time to pay any tax due. Taxpayers can file up to six months later with an extension but their taxes are due by the original due date. They can get an automatic extension to file when they make a full or partial payment withDirect Pay del IRS (en inglés),  theSistema de pago electrónico de impuestos federales , EFTPS, or bytarjeta de débito o crédito .

When paying electronically, taxpayers must select Form 4868 as the payment type and payment date to obtain an extension and there is no need to file a paper or electronic Form 4868. Save the confirmation as proof of payment and extension. With Direct Pay and the EFTPS system, taxpayers can choose to receive notifications about their payments.

Taxpayers can fileFormulario 4868(SP), Request for Automatic Extension to the File United States Personal Income Tax Return, electronically or on paper. April 17 is the due date for most to pay taxes due and avoid penalty and interest charges.

Be careful with email schemes. Taxpayers will only receive an email from Direct Pay or EFTPS if they have opted to receive an email notification when starting the payment process in DirectPat or signed up for email notifications through EFTPS. Report unsolicited emails claiming to be from the IRS or an IRS-related function tophishing@irs.gov.

Do you owe taxes? Taxpayers who owe taxes can use IRS Direct Pay or one of many other page electrónico options. They are safe and easy and taxpayers receive immediate payment confirmation. You can still mail a check or money order, payable to the United States Treasury, along with a payment coupon, Formulario 1040-V (en inglés). Taxpayers who are unable to pay by April 17 are often eligible to set up a monthly payment plan with the IRS using the plan de pagos a plazos en línea at IRS.gov.
