Picture-Perfect Placement: Things to Keep In Mind before Hanging an Oil Painting
3 min read

Hanging your painting is a vital step in displaying or storing your artwork. Have you placed an order for an oil painting from photo from an esteemed portrait painting service, but are unable to decide how to hang it once it arrives? There are a few ways to hang an oil painting but not all of them will work for everyone.

6 key points to remember

To hang your precious oil portrait in the best possible manner, you need to remember several things first.

  • Determine the shape and size of your frame. Ensure it’s a good fit for your painting. A too-large or small frame will just spoil a nice, rich oil painting and will make it look odd when you hang it. Additionally, ensure that it has all the required hardware already attached before purchasing it.
  • Avoid places that are near cooling or heating vents. Such locations can cause damage to the oil painting, shortening its lifespan. Avoid direct sunlight if possible. Too much exposure to UV rays can fade colors and cause discoloration in your artwork.
  • And you thought any kind of wall would do? Well, there is nothing worse than a bad wall. Before hanging the oil painting on the wall, you would need to check what kind of frame it has (if the painting comes with one). If you see there is no additional support, you can use extra screws or nails.
  • Always use the right type of adhesive, nails, or screws. Go for plugs to hide them in woodwork and make use of a gap between the wall and the frame that is equal to about one-third of the way up from the bottom edge.
  • If you have a bunch of oil paintings, hang them side by side to show visual connections. Arrange your portraits in such a manner that tells a story. Group similar pieces together and place them along one wall if you don’t have enough space for all the works. Using the same shape, size, or color palette, keep groups together.
  • It's important to consider the height when hanging an oil painting. If they are small, then the best way to hang them is at eye level. You can go higher if you have a bigger one but not so high that your guests are unable to see the details in the painting. It will be hard to admire them you know.
