When it comes to replacing one or more missing teeth, dental implants are the gold standard for restoring a natural smile. They also help to improve patient oral health and comfort.
Due to the relatively new nature of implant dentistry, dentists are often lacking the proper education and training to perform this work effectively. However, there are a number of courses available to help general dentists gain the skills needed to be successful dental implant specialists.
Surgical Mini-Residency
The American Board of Dental Implant Surgery’s Surgical Mini-Residency program is designed for Dental Implant Training and general dentists that want to increase their confidence when placing implants. This hands-on training is based on biological principles and the surgical techniques that top specialists use to obtain a CONSISTENT and PREDICTABLE outcome for their patients.
In addition to the Surgical Mini-Residency, the American Board of Dental Implant Surgery offers courses in restorative dental implant surgery and prosthetic implant dentistry. These are designed to give dentists the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to perform atraumatic extraction, bone graft, and soft tissue graft, and place & restore dental implants on models, pig jaws, and even their own patients*.
North Carolina Health Care Centers (NCOHC) and the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) have partnered to offer a mini-residency for safety net dental teams that treat people who have complex oral health needs. This four-weekend course is intended to help “train up” these safety net providers and allow them to perform oral surgeries in-house instead of referring patients to outpatient facilities.
MaxiCourse®
The American Academy of Implant Dentistry offers a comprehensive program called the MaxiCourse®. This 300-hour course provides a thorough understanding of diagnostic and treatment modalities necessary to treat patients with dental implants.
It includes case-based and hands-on learning methods, including interactive seminars, patient treatment, and cadaver dissection. It prepares you to take the AAID Associate Fellow/Fellow membership examination and become AAID credentialed.
In addition, this course is designed to educate clinicians on the proper diagnostic and surgical techniques of implant placement and restoration. The 300 hours of lecture, laboratory, and live surgical simulations provide a solid foundation for your practice.
The MaxiCourse® is a great place for any dentist to start their journey into implant dentistry. While it is not mandatory, it will help a clinician establish a strong foundation for their career in implant dentistry.
Advanced Graduate Education Program in Implant Dentistry
The Advanced Graduate Education Program in Implant Dentistry is a one-year fellowship program at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. It provides comprehensive training in all phases of implant dentistry: diagnosis and treatment planning, surgical and final restorative stages, understanding of prosthetic therapies, long-term maintenance, and prevention and management of implant complications.
In addition, the residency includes clinical experience in fixed and removable prosthodontics as well as surgical implant placement and maxillofacial prosthetics. This education prepares residents for a career in discipline-related teaching and research and enables them to develop skills in life-long learning and patient-centered care.
Our survey indicated that students and graduates wanted a comprehensive undergraduate education that included a solid introduction and knowledge foundation in implant dentistry. In particular, this was correlated with the implantation experience of participants (dentists working in private practices accounted for one-half of the survey group, and the majority had performed more than 500 implant procedures over the course of their professional career).
Research
The Research and Development Center for Dental Implant Training (R&D Center for Dental Implant Training) offers dental professionals the opportunity to learn the art and science of dental implants cost Alabama. It provides scientific-based instruction, standardized techniques, and the development of a network of continuing peer support.
The R&D Center for Dental Implant Training also aims to improve the quality of clinical education in implant dentistry by offering a variety of courses. During each course, doctors get hands-on experience and learn how to work with different implants.
Hands-on exercises are an important part of Hiossen educational programs, as they help practitioners to practice and apply the knowledge they have acquired during lectures. These exercises can be done on internally manufactured models or in a simulated environment.
