Puppies: what to expect (and what not to expect)
4 min read

We can help if you are a first-time puppy owner! Even though raising pups requires a lot of time and work, if you can steer clear of these typical communication errors, your first year together will go much more smoothly and enjoyably.

For them, this is a completely new universe!

Puppyhood involves learning how to be a dog first.

They are well-liked pets for a reason! Puppies are cute and lovable. We enjoy seeing children learn new things and take in their surroundings. It's crucial to keep in mind, though, that as they adjust to their new surroundings, they are also attempting to comprehend why the behavior they had been taught in the past is now causing problems.

Most puppies will have spent the first part of their lives learning how to be dogs from their parents and siblings before they join our families. canines are great instructors for other canines! Puppy learning about expectations and boundaries doesn't take long.

They don't comprehend why those behaviors are no longer valued when they try to engage with us in the same manner as they did with other canines after they are adopted into our human homes. Many times, it's their first experience living with people! Until we teach them, they won't be aware that there are NEW expectations and boundaries.

Recognizing the variations in communication

For our part, humans must keep in mind that typical puppy behaviors are not intentional wrongdoing.

Puppies that bite and mouth, get aroused easily, and poop on the floor aren't bad; they simply don't know what you expect of them yet.
When a puppy jumps and plays rough with another dog, they are exhibiting the canine etiquette; they won't understand that greeting humans calls for a different welcome until you demonstrate it to them.
It is your responsibility to demonstrate to your puppy what is expected of them, and it is crucial that you do so in a manner that they can comprehend. (We educate you to speak Dog for this reason.)

Effective and regular communication is a prerequisite for leadership.

Adopting a puppy, or any dog, entails assuming leadership responsibilities. Even if you aren't actively training them, they will still be looking to you for clues about what is and isn't attractive. They will start making their own conclusions if they interpret your actions as a collection of contradictory signals or if they are unable to understand your intentions!

A decent guideline to go by is this: don't let your puppy do anything that you wouldn't let a two-year-old do.

Selecting language that people can comprehend is essential to clear communication. It will not work to correct a puppy's behavior after the fact since their brains do not connect the two events in the same way that a human brain does. Actually, people might think you're crazy if you act that way, which would make them less trusting of you. Not only are physical threats and yelling poor forms of discipline, but they can also cause your puppy to develop insecure and worse behaviors when they become older.

Remaining composed and rewarding desired behavior is preferable.

Additional considerations

Puppies really aren't able to comprehend the world the way adult dogs are. Their bodies and brains are still developing, so there is a limit to how much new information they can store every day. It follows that training will require persistence.
They also require a lot of relaxation and bathroom breaks!

In addition, puppies will require more equipment for management than adult dogs do, such as leashes, crates, gates, and fences.

Recall that it's normal for your puppy to push boundaries, even if they make mistakes. They learn that way! They'll pick up the new skills if you remain composed, are consistent, and provide them with the necessary leadership.
