Calvin Murphy
When most Norwalk basketball fans are asked who the greatest player in Norwalk High School history was, they'll probably mention Calvin Murphy. He's an NBA Hall of Famer, a College All-American, and one of the best ever from Norwalk.
The shortest NBA player, he was a superstar in his heyday, even setting NBA records for free-throw percentage and consecutive made free throws. He played for the Houston Rockets and became a great fan favorite.
He was a member of the 119-209 team that the Rockets won in San Diego and helped make the franchise famous. He joined the Rockets in 1970, along with Rudy Tomjanovich.
During that time, the Rockets adopted their red-based color scheme and went on to win five championships. This year, the Rockets are celebrating their 55th anniversary with a green-and-gold color scheme that pays homage to the team's first season in San Diego.
According to the team's website, this look is also a nod to a few San Diego-era stars like Elvin Hayes and Calvin Murphy who memorably donned green and gold during their playing career. The Rockets debuted their new Hardwood Classic edition uniforms at halftime of Friday's game against Indiana, which included the jersey retirement ceremony for Hayes.
