Jeymes Samuel's "The Book of Clarence" is a visually stunning masterpiece that explores religious themes in a unique way. The protagonist, Clarence, is a street hustler in ancient Jerusalem who challenges the notion that every Black film must carry political significance. Despite his twin brother Thomas being an apostle of Jesus, Clarence himself is a cynical atheist and a drug dealer. The film portrays his world filled with club dens, sensually gyrating women, and shady characters. Clarence's lack of intelligence is evident from the film's opening scene, where he borrows money from a dangerous gangster named Jedediah the Terrible for a chariot race against Mary Magdalene. It remains unclear why Clarence sees this as a safe or profitable opportunity, given the risks involved. Nevertheless, the race between Clarence and Mary, filmed on location in Matera, Italy, captures the audience's attention with its immersive and practical approach. The use of real horses and the cinematography by Rob Hardy make the scene come alive, allowing viewers to feel the rumbling of the chariot wheels.
Clarence and his closest companion Elijah, naturally, suffer a devastating loss to Mary. Their defeat necessitates finding a means to gather enough funds to repay Jedediah. Initially, Clarence contemplates being baptized, believing that God will safeguard him. This notion is so conceited that John the Baptist amusingly slaps him. Subsequently, Clarence resolves to become an apostle, convinced that Jesus' group of accomplished individuals, so to speak, will shield him. However, this strategy encounters a few obstacles: Clarence, as you may recall, is an atheist; he is also estranged from his brother Thomas, who not only abandoned their mother but is also ashamed of Clarence's presence; furthermore, when given the opportunity, Clarence falters at the task assigned by the other disciples, managing to only liberate one gladiatorial slave, Barabbas.
