The wealthy continue to accumulate wealth, while the less fortunate endure frequent raids and destruction of their apartment complexes. In their respective debuts as directors, Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya present The Kitchen, a gritty science fiction drama set in the dystopian streets of London. In this world, social housing and safety nets are nonexistent, and we are introduced to Izi, played by Kane Robinson, a resident of "The Kitchen" - a neglected neighborhood filled with impoverished individuals and dilapidated apartment buildings. Izi works at a futuristic garden graveyard, where the deceased are transformed into plants. It is here that he encounters Benji, a young orphan who has recently lost his mother. Having known Benji's mother, Izi takes it upon himself to care for the boy, primarily to shield him from the dangers posed by rebellious criminal gangs who are fighting against the oppressive system.
It is always a delight to witness the abundance of ideas that emerge in a filmmaker's debut work, along with the genuine joy they exude in the process of creation. Tavares and Kaluuya's efforts embody this essence, as the world they present, despite its inclusion of numerous holograms, feels both authentic and meticulously crafted. The directors exhibit a keen understanding of camera placement and movement, skillfully executed by cinematographer Wyatt Garfield. Additionally, Nathan Parker's production design and Casey Williams' decor strike a perfect balance between the characters' realistic circumstances and the imaginative elements that shape the world, seamlessly integrating with the visual effects. This meticulous attention to detail beckons the viewer to engage in discussions surrounding the film's themes, which span from social class and police violence to mentorship and a sense of belonging.
Izi and Benji themselves explore these themes and emotions by sowing small seeds of hope and pride, as they anticipate improvements. These seeds can sometimes be quite small, as the script by Kaluuya and co-writer Joe Murtagh is inconsistent, lacking the same momentum as the visual style. Robinson and Bannerman do a decent job of portraying their characters' hopelessness, friction, and occasional happiness. However, the film includes long periods of aimless wandering around the premises, with little to no emotional resolution. There is one beautifully executed roller skate party, which exemplifies the filmmakers' intentions and showcases the pure joy captured in Tavares and Kaluuya's direction. Yet, it remains a rare moment of heartfelt expression in a movie that would benefit from more of such moments. These filmmakers should certainly continue their craft in the future, using even better ingredients.
