Should You Combine an Eyelid Lift and Facelift in Newport Beach?
4 min read

Have you ever wanted to go to sleep and wake up with a smoother, more youthful face? This is the dream that many people bring to their plastic surgeon, along with a plan to combine popular cosmetic surgeries to make it a reality.

But should you combine popular procedures like the eyelid lift and facelift? To find out, it is crucial to understand each procedure, as well as how they relate to one another.

What is an Eyelid Lift?

The upper eyelid lift – also known as blepharoplasty - is the second most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States. This procedure allows a plastic surgeon to lift, tighten, and reshape the eyelid area. Doing so can create a smoother, more youthful look by addressing sagging skin and unwanted fat deposits.

This procedure is well-liked because it can have a major impact on the youthfulness of the face without making the patient look “overdone”. It may also offer benefits such as improving the field of vision, decreasing the frequency of headaches, and more. Perhaps the biggest benefit of this surgery, though, is that it is generally an outpatient procedure. From beginning to end, you may spend less than two hours in your doctor’s office on the day of your eyelift.

What is a Facelift?

A  Preservation deep plane facelift is another popular cosmetic procedure. This surgery, though, is more dramatic – both in its procedure and its results. Performed under local and IV sedation without the need for general anesthesia. This technique is the next generation of facial rejuvenation by addressing the deep layer of facial muscles, known as the deep plane, rather than solely focusing on skin tightening. By targeting the deep plane, surgeons can lift and reposition the underlying structures of the face, including the superficial musculoaponeurotic system and platysma muscles and at the same time reduce excessive soft tissue damage, so that scars can be hidden and minimized as much as possible.

Should You Have Your Eyelid Lift and Facelift Done Simultaneously?

If you are already interested in upper eyelid surgery in Newport Beach, you might be wondering if this could be combined with a facelift. Combining multiple surgeries into a single day is a common practice, since it means shorter overall downtime and fewer trips under anesthesia.

However, combining your eyelid lift with a facelift in Newport Beach might not be as advisable as combining other types of cosmetic surgeries could be. There are some marked differences in the way the two surgeries are performed that can make them incompatible for conducting at the same time.

The facelift doesn’t requires general anesthesia, it can be performed under twilight sedation and local anesthesia. While an eyelid lift can be done under general anesthesia, most plastic surgeons prefer to do the surgery under local and IV anesthesia.

There are ways around this, as well as exceptions. If you and your surgeon determine that combining your surgical procedures is the best course of action, you might consider these alternative approaches to make doing so easier:

  • Performing the eyelift before the general anesthesia is administered to begin the facelift.
  • Discussing the eyelift extensively before surgery, so that it can be performed while the patient is under anesthesia with best possible results.
  • Redistribution of fat during the eyelift, or combination of other procedures such as a brow lift during the same procedure as the facelift.

Whatever you and your surgeon elect to do, do not hesitate to pose questions to your care team. They can help you better understand how to prepare for your procedure and get the best possible results, whether you have one surgery or several.
