Who is your customer?

One of the worst answered questions in business land. Often the answer is: everyone. You used to get away with that. Back then you could make good money with generic products for all people. But companies like V&D have noticed that the world doesn't work that way anymore.

Everyone thinks they are special. And also wants to be served in a special way by companies. So no more physiotherapy for everyone, but for crossfitters with a shoulder injury.

So make your target group as small, but workable as possible. Better a big fish in a small pond than in an ocean.

What's the problem?

Entrepreneurship is solving other people's problems for money. So take a good look at your customer and the problem you want to solve with your product or service. And your product does indeed solve several problems and is absolutely fantastic, but that is less interesting for your customer at the front door. He wants to know what the biggest problem is that he will solve with your product or service.

This makes it easier for the customer to decide whether he wants to become a customer.

What is your unique solution?

This is often the most difficult question to answer, especially for the self-employed. The answer to that question does not begin with the word “I”.

A distinctive character (because that's what we're talking about here) of a company must be sustainable. Which means so much that it cannot be copied by your competitors. It must be something unique. And yes, you are unique. But "Because I feel people so well" or "Because I bake the best sandwiches" are not good, sustainable answers. Good for your ego, not sustainable for your company. Good distinguishing capabilities are things like a unique methodology, patents, exclusive rights, links removed or improved from your value chain, strategic partners, etc.

DETERMINING YOUR COMPANY'S STRATEGY

The above 3 questions are the core of your business strategy. Seems very simple, in practice it turns out to be very difficult. Because for that you have to do one thing, which we as people have tried to avoid as much as possible in recent years: CHOOSE.

Without a well-chosen target audience, you're talking to everyone. And you are not relevant to anyone.

Without the choice for a large, important, specific and preferably underserved problem that that target group is struggling with, the urgency to solve that problem in exchange for money is nil.

And if you can't clearly show what exactly makes you different from all those others who solve the same problem, the choice for someone else is just as easy to make.

So this phase is all about choosing. That's hard on your own. Let alone when you have a (large) team, who all have an opinion.

Therefore, use the following step-by-step plan to determine the growth strategy of your organization.

Organize a brainstorming meeting (even if you are alone)
List all options and choose the best options in which your company excels. As a company you have to be good at it, be happy with it and be able to earn money with it. When your choices take care of all three, you know you've chosen well.
Difficulty choosing? Give yourself a deadline. And stick to it.
Difference between a business strategy and a marketing strategy
There are several differences between a business strategy and a marketing strategy, but there is also sufficient overlap.

Business strategy = clear, well-arranged and concrete plan, in which the objectives of the company are stated. Mainly focused on the long term. Support within the team is essential in this regard.

Marketing strategy = more focus on the marketing aspect and less on the company. How can we best offer our services and/or products to the target group? The marketing strategy is therefore more of a part of the business strategy.
