6 min read

When it comes to breathtaking destinations in Pakistan, the first few things that come to mind are often the soaring mountain ranges or the ancient landmarks of its historic cities. However, there is another hidden gem in Pakistan that is less known but equally awe-inspiring: Sonmiani Beach.

Located on the Arabian Sea, Sonmiani Beach is situated about 30 kilometers west of the bustling city of Karachi. The beach is a long stretch of golden sand, and the crystal-clear blue waters of the Arabian Sea that meet it make for a stunning sight. One of the most intriguing aspects of the beach is the presence of mud volcanoes, which makes it an unparalleled attraction for tourists and locals alike.

The mud volcanoes of Sonmiani Beach are a result of the build-up of gas and sediment in the ground. The pressure of the gas causes the sediment to be ejected from the ground, forming small hills of mud. Visitors can hike to the top of the mud volcanoes and take in the breathtaking views of the coastline. The mud volcanoes are also an excellent opportunity for those interested in geology, who can learn about the geological processes that create these unique formations.

The area is famous for the large concentration of water birds including migratory and resident ones. More than 20,000 birds representing 52 species usually visit Sonmiani in winter. The area is one of the designated Ramsar sites in Pakistan. The area is also included in the Global 200 eco-regions of WWF as an outstanding example of major habitat types. It is part of the Arabian Sea Eco-region. It is the home of grebes, pelicans, flamingos, herons, storks cranes, gulls, and terns.

Mud Volcanoes

In addition to the mud volcanoes, Sonmiani Beach A Hidden Gem is also home to a variety of wildlife. The clear blue waters of the Arabian Sea attract dolphins, turtles, and other sea creatures, which can often be seen swimming near the beach. Birdwatchers can enjoy the numerous species of birds that can be found in the area, including pelicans, flamingos, and eagles.

The beach is not as crowded as some of the other popular beaches in Pakistan, making it an ideal spot to soak up the sun and read a book. The waters are relatively calm, making it safe for swimming and other water sports such as snorkeling and diving.

In recent years, efforts have been made to develop Sonmiani Beach as a tourist destination.
