The best White Water Rafting in Colorado for all levels of experience

4 min read

Are you looking for the best vacation? Some fun near the water? So, White Water Rafting Colorado is what you need. Here, all river rapids are rated on class scales to help you determine the size and technicality of the whitewater.

Many of you might not know what the depth will be in a specific area. Your ideal trip needs may vary. Maybe you are an adventure junkie or a beginner.

Most will aim at relaxing and soaking up the beauty of the scenery. Or maybe you were having your younger ones alongside. Each class highlights the difficulty level, from easy to expert.

Let us understand each Colorado Rafting Rapid Class so you can decide what Colorado River Adventures class you should go with.

Class I Rapids

These have moving water with small waves that tug at boats in a downstream flow. Rafting trips on class I whitewater are generally labeled as Scenic float trips.

Most rivers have stretches of calm class I water, creating pleasant breaks between larger rapids. You can raft on any river. Many Colorado Rafting river trips that are great for beginners contain class I-III whitewater rapids.

Class II Rapids

These are easy to navigate, and generally broad sections of water move fast enough to create 1-3 foot whitecaps. These are waves that are readily seen amidst broad channels that can be spotted without scouting the route from the shoreline. Some channelization is required to keep the boat headed straight into each approaching wave.

The White Water Rafting Colorado offers a day trip section near Moab, Utah, with rapids like Onion Creek Rapid, Cloudbust, and Rocky Rapid.

Class III Rapids

These rapids contain 4 or 5-foot tall waves that will crash over the bow. You will feel the hydraulics a bit stronger, possibly channeling between brief, narrow passages such as boulders or a cliff wall.

Boats will shimmy and jolt with the increased punch of these larger waves, but generally, the jolts are brief, with a calmer and wider recovery area below each obstacle or wave, making the consequences of hitting something less severe.

Desolation Canyon, Utah, Cow Swim Rapid,Three Fords Rapid, and Green River are some suggestions where you can try the Rapid III adventure.

Class IV Rapids

These White Water Rafting Colorado rapids have larger waves, narrow passages, and multiple obstacles to avoid requiring precise maneuvering to avoid upset. These rapids tend to be longer, steeper, and more technical, which translates to turns, spins, and lateral moves across the current.

You can experience Class IV at Westwater Canyon, Skull Rapid, Colorado River, near Moab, Utah. If you want to try some other places, then we recommend Lower Salmon River, Middle Fork Salmon River, Snake River, and Hell Canyon in Idaho.

Class V Rapids

These Colorado Rafting rapids are bigger and more intense. Expect vertical drops, strong currents, big waves, boulders, and holes large enough to flip or hold boats in their more powerful hydraulics.

Lava Falls, Crystal Rapid, Hance Rapid, Horn Creek, and Hermit can be ideal places for your adventure.

Class VI Rapids

These Colorado Rafting Rapids are generally considered “un-navigable” or “un-runnable”, These are amplified versions of what you would find in class V rapids.

Costa Rica’s Pacuare River can reach Class VI levels during high runoff. It is prohibited to have rapids at high flows.
