The Different Elements Of Web Design

2 min read

Web Design encompasses many different skills and disciplines in the production and maintenance of websites. The different areas of Web Design include web graphic design; interface design; authoring, including standardised code and proprietary software; user experience design; and search engine optimization.

Often many individuals will work in teams covering different aspects of the design process, although some designers will cover them all.[1] The term Web Design is normally used to describe the design process relating to the front-end (client side) design of a website including writing markup.

Web Design partially overlaps web engineering in the broader scope of web development. Web designers are expected to have an awareness of usability and if their role involves creating markup then they are also expected to be up to date with web accessibility guidelines.

The different areas of web design include :

Web graphic design : This covers everything from designing logos and other graphical elements that appear on a website, through to layout and colour schemes.

Interface design : This is the Web Design of the user interface, and how users interact with a website. This includes things like navigation menus and buttons, and making sure that the interface is easy to use.

Authoring : This covers the creation of the actual content for a website, which can be either static or dynamic. It includes writing markup and coding.

User experience design : This is the design of the overall experience that a user has when using a website, and covers things like how easy it is to find what you’re looking for, and whether the website is easy to use.
