Minecraft is an open world video game originally developed by Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson and later, published and developed by Mojang. Minecraft's creative and building features allow players to create structures from textured cubes in an artificially generated 3D world. Exploration, resource collection, crafting, combat, and other activities are all part of the game. Multiple gameplay modes are available including survival mode, where players must gather resources to build the world and maintain health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to construct with and the ability to fly and explore, an adventure mode in which players create custom maps by other players, and spectator mode, where players can fly around and clip through blocks, but cannot put up blocks. The PC version of the game is famous for its third-party mods which add various new items, characters, and quests to the game.

Minecraft received five awards at the 2011 Game Developers Conference. Of the Game Developers Choice Awards, it won the Innovation Award, Best Downloadable Game Award, and Best Debut Game Award; from the Independent Games Festival, it received the Audience Award and the Seumas McNally Grand Prize. In 2012, Minecraft was awarded a Golden Joystick Award in the category of the best downloadable game. As of June 2015 over 70 million copies were sold, including 20 million sold between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as 20 million on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One and 20 million on PC, making it the most-sold PC game to date and the third best-selling video game ever. Microsoft announced on September 15, 2014 that it would buy Mojang as well as the rights to Minecraft intellectual property, for US$2.5billion. The acquisition was completed on November 6, 2014.
