On World Health Day (WHD), the World Health Organization (OMS) forms a team with international football icons to inspire governments and citizens around the world to act in the interests of universal health coverage. The CSU ensures that everyone in the world, in all parts of the world, has access to the help they need to stay healthy and avoid economic hardship.

In honour of CSU Day, the OMS introduces two new tools: one to assist governments in designing and delivering appropriate service packages for their populations, and the other to provide people with reliable information that supports daily decisions they make to protect their health and well-being.

«The World Cup is the greatest prize in football, and the greatest prize in life is good health and well-being,» declared Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the OMS. «La salud es un derecho humano fundamental, as is the growth of peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable economies and societies. The tools we present today will assist governments and individuals in making that right a reality.»

The 2022 CSU Day arrives at a critical juncture in which countries around the world are recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, while also dealing with numerous other crises such as economic and energy constraints, climate change, and conflict.

The CSU Day begins the countdown to the high-level CSU meeting that will take place at the United Nations General Assembly in 2023. The Chiefs of State and Government stated at the first high-level meeting on the CSU in 2019 that health is a requirement as well as a result and an indicator of sustainable development in the social, economic, and environmental dimensions. They have made a firm commitment to achieving universal health coverage by 2030, by expanding global initiatives aimed at creating a healthier world for all. The 2023 meeting is an opportunity to assess past achievements and galvanise political support and global action in order to achieve the CSU's goals.

Day of the CSU in the FIFA World Cup
In anticipation of the FIFA 2022TM World Cup semifinals, the OMS and its Goodwill Ambassador for Sport and Health, football legend Didier Drogba, hosted the CSU Day celebrations in Doha (Qatar). This event was part of a full day of activities organised by the Education Above All Foundation to support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 3: health and well-being.

«I found myself in an unusual situation in which, if there were problems on the field, help would arrive immediately, and we have recently seen how important that assistance can be. But, as we all know, it is not always the case away from the field,» said Didier Drogba. «Badly equipped health centres, understaffed health-care workers, and a lack of medications and vaccines jeopardise people's health around the world. Good health necessitates teamwork, which is why we need governments to commit to policies that support universal health coverage and give everyone access to what they need to be healthy. When we band together for everyone's health, we all win.»

Fans of all ages gathered to show their support for universal health care while The Mad Stuntman, an electronic dance music and vocalist, performed his hit song "I Like to Move It," emphasising the importance of staying active and the role of sports in promoting good health and well-being.

Sherrie Silver, a Rwandan-British choreographer who won the MTV award, is an advocate for the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development, an ambassador for Malaria No More, and a supporter of Rwandan development.

«En el Da de la Cobertura Sanitaria Universal, somos todos activos y pongamos de nuestra parte para hacer que la salud para todos sea nuestro objetivo,» dijo Alisson Becker, portero de Brasil y de Liverpool, y Embajador de Buena Voluntad de la OMS para la Promoción de la Salud.

A new tool from the OMS to assist countries in providing universal health coverage.
The achievement of national health objectives has been hampered by the lack of a structured approach to designing and providing a comprehensive set of health services tailored to local needs.

The OMS is launching a new tool called Universal Health Coverage Service Package Delivery and Implementation, or UHC SPDI Tool (Prestación y aplicación del módulo de servicios de cobertura sanitaria universal), to assist countries in developing their own health-care delivery models within the framework of the CSU. This innovative and practical online tool includes functions that will allow national health planners to choose from a wide range of health services — including promotion, prevention, reanimation, cure, rehabilitation, and palliative care — that people require to achieve the highest level of health and well-being possible.

The tool is also intended to assist in determining the requirements for human resources, essential medical products, infrastructure, and other elements required for effective health-care delivery. Furthermore, it focuses on primary care and urgent care, emphasising the importance of primary care as a foundation for strengthening health-care systems and uniting all sectors in the pursuit of universal health care. The successful implementation of a national health service delivery model will enable countries to accelerate their progress toward universal health coverage.

Universal health information on "Salud for All"
The OMS has also launched a digital resource for the public called «Tu vida, tu salud: advice and information for health and well-being». Provides people with reliable health information that they can access, understand, and use in their daily lives at various stages of their lives.

The resource provides basic information, with reference to OMS technical guidelines, on important topics such as pregnancy and postpartum health, as well as ways to stay healthy and active in later life. It also provides information about people's rights and abilities regarding access to and use of information for health and well-being.

The Day of Universal Health Coverage (Da de la CSU), observed on December 12th, is an annual gathering in which advocates for the cause raise their voices and share the stories of the millions of people who continue to wait for health care, urge leaders to make wise health-care investments, and remind the world of the importance of CSU. It is an official day designated by the United Nations to commemorate the anniversary of the United Nations' recognition of the CSU as an essential priority for international development in 2012.
