The Significance Of The Ten Commandments In Our Daily Lives

The Significance Of The Ten Commandments In Our Daily Lives
8 min read

God, our Heavenly Father, gave Moses the Ten Commandments to share with the followers and bring them under the light, and guidance comes directly from the Almighty God. Years ago, bestowed commandments are still a great source of influence on our society.

The primary reason to bestow the Ten Commandments was to form a new society after the Israelites left and saved their lives from the illegal and unscrupulous detention of the Egyptians. Moses led the way and provided the foundation of a new society that will be the modern legal system source.

Only in the Old Testament, we have 613 Commandments, coming from God Almighty. But out of those all, only the 10 Commandments have made their way and were written in stone. These 10 Commandments have been the basic foundation of our society according to God’s moral law.

When God sent His Spiritual Son, Jesus Christ, into this world, he followed these 10 Commandments in all through His actions and preached to others to do the same at large. For example, in (Exodus 20: 14 and Deuteronomy 5: 18), Jesus said,

“You shall not commit adultery.”

And further added in Matthew 5: 27 - 28,

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.” But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

The Ten Commandments

On Mount Sinai, God directed these commandments on Moses, written on the two stone tablets. In Bible and the Old Testament, the bestowing of the Ten Commandments has been mentioned in Exodus and Deuteronomy. These Commandments are;

  • I am the Lord thy God: thou shalt not have strange Gods before me.
  • Thou shall not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
  • Remember to keep holy the Lord's Day.
  • Honor thy father and thy mother.
  • Thou shalt not kill.
  • Thou shalt not commit adultery.
  • Thou shalt not steal.
  • Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
  • Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife.
  • Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods.

The Significance Of The Ten Commandments In Our Lives

The 10 Commandments have been our foundation to live in society. They are the ultimate teachings of God mentioned in the Holy Bible at various places. Here is the significance of these Commandments in our lives.

The True-Self And Our Presence

In Exodus 19 and Exodus 20, God has identified the Israelites as the chosen land's chosen people.

“And you shall be to me a ‘kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

                                                                                                            (Exodus 19: 6)

The similar is with us as Christians, as we too are summoned to the kingdom of priest and a holy nation. We have to stand alone and live our lives according to these 10 Commandments for identifying our true selves in this world.

They Lead Our Way To Heaven

These 10 Commandments teach that there will be false claimers in the world and the worshippers of idols. We, as Christians, must not lost in the false sayings and claims and stick to the oneness of God and offer our prayers and adores to the one supreme power, i.e., Heavenly Father.

In general life, if we don't follow the rules and disobey the commandments, we have to face difficulties and punishments. In a similar way, if we don't obey and act upon these commandments, we will be punished and would not be allowed to enter heaven.

"You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.”

                                                                                                (Exodus 20: 4-5)

The Day Of The Sabbath Connects Us All To Our Creator

The day of the Sabbath plays a pivotal role in bridging our relationship with our Heavenly Father. The seventh day of the week is Sabbath, and that is why we are commanded not to do any labor on that day and finish all the chores and tasks by the sixth day. Moreover, we are instructed to keep the Sabbath a holy day as it becomes the source of connection with our creator, God.

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six Days you shall labor and do all you work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”

(Exodus 20: 8-11)

Meaning To Our Existence

Upon asking about freedom, most people would answer it like a feeling of liberation in which we can do anything we want. However, further elucidation would brief that the interpreted meaning is a complete lie. The real meaning of freedom isn't to do what pleases you but to do the right by having an eye and focus on everything.

The life and freedom we get from God are to lead our way to furtherance in life. The following verses would help us understand how God promised to provide the true life and the meaning of freedom in life.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

(John 10: 10)

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

(John 8: 32)

The Final Takeaway

Moving towards the conclusion, we get a little more understanding of the 10 Commandments and their significance in life. We, as Christians, must have the proper knowledge of what our Father in Heaven has asked of us, but sadly the knowledge we have is so little and sometimes unclear to comprehend and describe. So, in a nutshell, what's important is to realize the true meaning and significance of God's commandments for us and lead our lives according to it and what's written in the Holy Bible.
