In April, there was also the 14th BAFTA Games Awards, which examined the "outstanding artistic achievement" of the video game industry in the year 2017. Five awards were won by Ninja Theory LTD, British creators, for their game Hellblade. These included British Game, Artistic Achievement and Game Beyond Entertainment.



British marketplace and video game seller OnBuy.com looked at data from a map produced by UK Interactive Entertainment (or UKie) and found out that Britain has released 19,617 games so far. As expected, London is the city that has released the most video games in the UK The capital has released around 29% of all games in Great Britain (about 5,763). Manchester was second with 533 games.



20 million of the UK's 6 to 64-year-old population (that's 42% of the population) use video gaming. According to the Interactive Software Federation of Europe, (ISFE), UK gamers spend 8.9 hours per week playing as compared to 6.8.1 and 6.2 hours, respectively.

This is not an exhaustive list. Here are 10 of the most popular games from Great Britain.



Grand Theft Auto Series: It was created in Scotland by Rockstar North. The series, which was critically acclaimed and has sold more than 250 million units. It is actually the fourth most watched video franchise. British newspaper The Telegraph classified the series as one of Britain's top exports.



Batman Arkham Series: Based upon the DC Comic's Batman Arkham Series, the Arkham Series video games were developed in London by Rocksteady Studios. The first Arkham Series was released in 2009. The series' popularity earned it in the Guinness book for world records, for the "Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever" and for both Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.



Sea of Thieves: Released worldwide on March 20, 2018. Sea of thieves was developed in the village of Twycross by the developers at Rare. The game allows players to play the role of a pirate sailing the seas , and completing missions. Sea of Thieves was the most sold game Rare have made since they began monitoring sales. It has also been the 8th most popular game in 2018 to date.



Forza Horizon Series: Developed in Leamington Spa by Playground Games, the Forza Horizon series has enjoyed worldwide success since the initial game's launch in 2012. Each game in the Horizon series has earned an average Metacritic score of 85/100 or greater. As of December 2016 the series has earned more than US1 billion in retail sales and makes Forza one of the highest selling video game franchises.



Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice: Get five awards at this year's BAFTA Games Awards, Ninja Theory's Hellblade was developed in Cambridge. The dark fantasy action adventure game was a commercial success; in fact it was the most popular game in Europe's PlayStation Store for the month of its release.

Sniper Elite: The tactical shooting game series Sniper Elite was actually developed in Oxford by Rebellion. The first game in the series released in 2005, and the entire series has sold more than 10 million copies as of 2015. Rebellion Developments, a gaming company, even published a novel that was based on the game, titled Sniper Elite The Spear of Destiny.



Burnout Series The highly successful multiplatform Burnout series was developed by Criterion Games from Guildford, UK. The Need for Speed series is another popular game from the British gaming company. Both of these series are racing video games - an genre that Criterion spokesman Alex Ward stated they were "steering away from".



Crackdown 2: This open-world action adventure game was published by Microsoft Game Studios, but it was developed in Dundee by Ruffian Games. Crackdown is believed to have had an impact on open-world gaming. Den of Geek's James Hunt described the first Crackdown game in an original series of postmodern superhero creations for games consoles. It was also great fun.



LEGO Series: Not satisfied with their huge success with children of all ages playing with blocks, LEGO has conquered the video game world with their series including hits such as Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 and Lego: The Lord of the Rings. The series was created by Traveller's Tales (or TT Games) in Bolton.



Football Manager: This series, also known as Worldwide Soccer Manager in North America (or North America), was actually created in London by Sports Interactive. Well-received and extremely popular with its players, the series of games has an active online community. Since partnering with Japanese giants at Sega takeover, the series has sold 15 million copies across different platforms.
