Technical Factors Required to Sow, Plant & Harvest Coriander

Here are a few tips and considerations to keep in mind for farming high-yielding coriander crops.

  • Soil & Climate Conditions

The ideal soil type for coriander is well-drained loamy soil. However, the ideal ph range between 6-8 is suitable for growing this nutritive plant.

Coriander plants can easily thrive in dry and cool weather. Moreover, just keep in mind this plant is not at all tolerant to any frost. Therefore, the coriander plant can grow in temperatures between 20-30 degrees C.

  • Seed Management

The whole seeds are not viable for sowing as they won’t germinate. Thus, it’s better if they are cut in halves prior to sowing. Ideally, the seeds start germinating within 1-2 weeks of sowing. The ideal seed rate is:

  • 20-25kg/ha in rainfed crop conditions.
  • 10-12kg/ha in irrigated crop conditions.

Germination will be effective if seeds are soaked in water for 12 hours before sowing. Moreover, treat this plant’s leaves with Azospirillium @1.5 kg/ha for better yield. Additionally, to prevent these seeds safe from wilt disease, treat the seeds with Trichoderma viride in the quantity of about 50kg/ha.

  • Land Preparation

Before the arrival of the monsoon, the rainfed areas require ploughing almost 3-4 times. Hence, once the monsoon is over, the plantation should begin immediately. Doing this will help break the clods and prevent excess soil moisture accumulation. Moreover, quality tractors like Farmtrac 60 powermaxx are ideal for preparing the land.

The land needs ploughing 2-3 times for irrigated crops until the fine tilth is achieved. Furthermore, beds and channels are highly useful for quick drainage and mixing of soil.

Moreover, the spacing between split coriander seeds should be 20cmX15cm. And to avoid the disruption of herbicides, applying Fluchloralin of 700 ml diluted in 500 litres of water per ha is highly suitable.

  • Fertiliser and Manure

After the sowing for the irrigated crop, the top dressing should be 10kgN/ha for 1 month. Furthermore, farm yard manure of 10 tons/ha is suitable in the following quantities for rainfed and irrigated crops:

  • P- 40 Kg.
  • N - 10 Kg.
  • K - 20 Kg.
  • Irrigation Facilities

1st irrigation is done immediately after sowing. Additionally, second irrigation should be given on 3rd day. And further irrigation should be planned after 6-10 days of intervals. One can avoid irrigation in the rainy season.

  • Harvesting of Coriander

When the coriander fruits are green and beginning to dry, they are ready to harvest. Additionally, the plants are ready for harvesting within 30-35 days of planting. Furthermore, the plants require drying and thrashing using small sticks.

The average yield of coriander grain is 6-7 tonnes per ha. Moreover, the irrigated coriander grain can yield up to 500-600 kg/ha. And for rainfed coriander grain, the yield is 300-400 kg/ha.
