In infants, early arm movements are shaped by the presence of army toy. In the absence of toys, early arm movements decrease and later increase in number, particularly in midline movements such as hand to mouth and hand to face. This pattern of change is thought to serve as the foundation for purposeful reaching in later years.

A figure toy 12 includes a head 58 and a neck 52. The head carries a mushroom pin 60, which is journalled into a cavity 64 in the base of the head. A button connector 66 is also carried on the head of the figure toy. The legs extend from the upper end of the head to the lower torso portion of the toy.

The Arm is a releasable device that lets children engage in a range of activities. Children will enjoy playing with the limbs while learning about fluid dynamics. It also allows kids to experiment with construction equipment. It is 16 inches long and 11 1/2" tall, and is hydraulically powered. It has won the Toy of the Year award.

To engage the arm, the child-user may rotate the sleeve 166 until the lever 164 reaches the position in FIG. 6. Then, the child-user squeezes the trigger 156. This causes the lever 164 to engage the leg 70. The latch 172 is then brought into bridging engagement with the slot 174 in sleeve 166. When the trigger 156 is released, the latch 172 will be released.

A figure toy is preferably a toy, and in some embodiments the arm is actuated by a hand grip. The arm may have a number of joints that are connected together by pins. In addition, the hand grip may be adapted to be manually maneuvered. As a result, the arm is able to swing in an arc about the pivot pin.
