Understanding Your Skin Type: A Comprehensive Guide
6 min read

Ever had breakouts from your exciting new skincare purchase? We’ve all been there. Determining what works best for your skin can be a process of trial and error.

Skin types vary from dry, normal, oily, sensitive, and even combination. Different types of skin have different needs, so identifying your skin type is an essential step in crafting the perfect skincare routine for yourself.

The main indicators of your skin type are the amount of sebum produced by the skin and how it reacts to products that may be considered harsh.

Identify your Skin Type

You can easily identify your skin type with two easy tests at home.

The Cleanse and Wait Test

Simply wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat dry it. Wait for 30 minutes, without layering any other product, and examine how your skin feels.

  • If your skin is shiny or greasy all over, you have oily skin
  • If your skin feels tight, flaky, or rough, you have dry skin
  • If your skin is greasy only in and around the nose, you likely have combination skin
  • If your skin feels hydratedand regular in texture, you have normal skin

The Blotting Sheet Test

Use a blotting sheet to determine your skin type since they absorb the oil from the skin.

Wash your face, and wait for 30 minutes without applying any other product. Pat a blotting sheet over different parts of your face. Hold it up to a light source and examine the amount of oil the sheet has absorbed.

  • If the blotting sheet absorbs an abundance of oil, you have oily skin
  • If there is no oil or barely noticeable amounts on the sheet, you have dry skin
  • If there is a minimal amount of oil on the sheet, you have normal skin
  • If the blotting sheet absorbs oil only from the t-zone, you likely have combination skin

How to care for each Skin Type

Everyone’s skin is unique. Your skin may not be limited to one skin type, since factors like stress, seasonal changes, pollution, and nutrition affect how your skin looks and feels. Each skin type has needs that must be taken into consideration when picking products that are right for you. CTSM – cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturizer- are the building blocks of every skincare routine and must include ingredients that address the concern of each skin type.

Oily skin:Skin that produces an excess amount of sebum, and appears to be shiny and greasy, especially in the t-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). Oily skin is also more prone to acne breakouts, blackheads, and clogged pores since excess oil tends to trap impurities and dead skin.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredient that treats damaged and acne-prone skin. It provides enough hydration without making the skin greasy, prevents breakouts, and brightens complexion.

Dry skin: Skin that produces less oil tends to be dry, tight, and rough in texture. The lack of natural oils also leads to dehydrated skin and an increased appearance of fine lines.

Hyaluronic acidis a boon for dry skin. It provides intense hydration, reduces the appearance of fine lines, and treats acne scars.

Normal Skin: Skin has balanced oil production and no specific texture concerns. It is not prone to blemishes. It is essential to have a good skincare routine in place to protect the skin from potential infection.

Witch Hazel extractis excellent in a routine for normal skin, as it soothes the skin, prevents skin damage, and helps with skin irritation and sunburn.

Combination skin: Excess oil production in the T-zone and dry patches in other areas make combination skin very tricky to take care of. Combination skin also tends to be more prone to hormone imbalances and seasonal changes.

Niacinamideis incredibly effective for treating combination skin, which boostsmoisture in the skin while also controlling oil production.

Sensitive skin:It is more vulnerable to external irritants and strong ingredients. All the aforementioned skin types may be sensitive in addition to being dry, normal, oily, or combination skin. It is essential to patch-test all products before applying them to the face.

Aloe vera is a gentle yet effective moisturizer, bacteria killer, and acne treatment. It is anti-inflammatoryand has numerous skin-healing properties, making it perfect for sensitive skin.
