Your Internet Protocol (IP), address is not something you should be thinking about. It's because it's floating in the background with layers of technology layered on top of it to make the entire web browsing experience more user-friendly.
You're not connected to the internet at all time. You connect to a network - usually a home or office or an open network such as in a coffee shop - which is connected to the internet through an internet service provider (ISP).
Most times, you connect to the network via the router who is responsible for assigning private IP addresses to each device on the network.
This allows it to transfer data between devices, which ensures that the correct content is delivered to the correct location. Your ISP assigns an IP address that is public to websites. This is used as an identifier to your entire network. The public IP address includes details such as the ISP to which it is linked and the general location of any server that you are connected. It could be the zip code or the city.
This means that hiding your IP address is trying to hide the network to which you are connected as well as all associated information.

You connect to the VPN by sending encrypted requests to your ISP. This forwards them to one of your VPN's servers that will forward them to their destination. During this process, the VPN disguises your IP address behind its own, so that when your requests are received it appears like they're coming from that server, not from your network.
