What is Spondylolysis? An Informational Blog.
4 min read

Spondylosis is a term that refers to a degenerative condition affecting the spine. Wear & tear in our bodies including bones is normal as we age. This is also true for the backbone of our body, the spine. Spondylosis encompasses various changes that occur within the spine due to this natural process. In some rare cases, surgery involving spine implants is required for the treatment of the condition.

What is Spondylolysis? An Overview.

While often used interchangeably, spondylosis is a broader term encompassing different types of degeneration in our spine. The most common form is spinal osteoarthritis, similar to osteoarthritis that affects other joints in the body. This involves the breakdown of cartilage, the cushioning material between the vertebrae, leading to decreased space and potential bone-on-bone contact.

What Are the Types of spondylosis?

Spondylosis Deformans

This refers to the formation of bone spurs (osteophytes) at the edges of the vertebrae, which can sometimes impinge on nerves or the spinal cord.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH)

This condition involves ossification (bone formation) in ligaments along the spine, leading to stiffness and reduced range of motion.

Who is at Risk of Spondylolysis?

Spondylosis is a common age-related condition that can affect anyone. While anyone can develop it, the risk increases with age, with the majority of cases seen in people over 50. Certain factors that increase the risk include:

Genetics: Family history plays a role, with a higher risk if a close relative has spondylosis.

Occupation: Jobs involving heavy lifting, poor posture, or repetitive motions can stress the spine, accelerating degeneration.

Obesity: Excess weight puts additional strain on the spine, contributing to wear and tear.

Smoking: Smoking is associated with decreased blood flow to the spine, potentially impacting healing and repair processes.

What Are the Symptoms and Diagnosis of Spondylolysis?

Spondylosis doesn't always cause symptoms. However, when present, they may include:

Pain: This can be localized in the neck (cervical spondylosis) or lower back (lumbar spondylosis).

Stiffness: Difficulty turning the head or bending forward may be experienced.

Radiating pain: In some cases, pain can radiate down the arms (cervical) or legs (lumbar) due to nerve compression.

Diagnosis of spondylosis usually involves a physical examination by a healthcare professional, potentially followed by imaging tests like X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs to assess the extent of degeneration and any associated abnormalities.

How to Manage Spondylosis?

There's no cure for spondylosis, but various strategies can help manage symptoms and improve daily life:

Pain management: Medications like pain relievers or anti-inflammatory drugs can help alleviate pain.

Physical therapy: Exercises can strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and maintain proper posture.

Heat or cold therapy: Heat or cold therapy has proven effective in relieving pain and inflammation for various orthopedic conditions.

Lifestyle modifications: Maintaining a healthy weight, practicing good posture, and engaging in low-impact exercise can ease the burden on the spine.

Minimally invasive procedures: In some cases, injections or nerve blocks might be considered to target specific pain sources.

Living with Spondylosis

Spondylosis is a common condition, and with proper management, most people can lead active and fulfilling lives. Early diagnosis, proactive management, and a healthy lifestyle can go a long way in minimizing symptoms and ensuring optimal spinal health. If you experience persistent neck or back pain, consult your healthcare professional for proper evaluation and guidance. Remember, early intervention is key to managing spondylosis effectively.
