What Katy’s Experiences Can Teach Us All

She was drunk, and not completely in her senses but was conscious enough to understand that she had violated the law.  The officer was standing right next to her car, waiting for her to pull down her window.

Katy gulped, composed herself and pulled the window down. Smiling, she asked the officer, “Yes, officer?” The next thing she heard was the officer asking for her license and insurance. She was asked to get out of the car and given a field sobriety test. Then asked if she would blow in the breathalyzer, which Katy refused.

These are the words that Pamela Newman used in her book. It has taken its readers by storm. I was recommended to it by someone, who herself suffered a lot due to reckless mistakes in her life, and her life completely changed after reading it. There are a couple of important lessons in the book that will be of interest to you and mean that you should read it as well.

The following lessons are what I believe are some of the highlights of the book. I hope that each reader who benefits from these lessons will buy the book too because all this is invaluable!

Don’t Be Reckless with Your Life = Don’t Be Stupid!

Katy, who is the focal character from the book, knew that resisting arrest would not help her at all and there was not much that she could do; still, she continued and was not scared because she had been pulled over before - all for driving under the influence of alcohol. So, this was not the first time in her life that she had been pulled over by the police, and it was certainly not the first time that she had been drinking and driving.

Katy became careless and she did not seriously ponder about the consequences of her actions. It all led to her undoing because she was jailed, and this is exactly what Pamela wants the readers to understand. Life can only give you so many chances, until you run out of luck. And often, you must pay a heavy price for being stupid.

Don’t Repeat a Mistake Ever Again = So, You Don’t Have to be Sorry!

Katy’s encounter with the police made her experience a flashback, which took her back 35 years. She recalled her first encounter with drinking and driving. In that incident, she was cited for a DUI and ordered community service from the judge along with getting a fine. After that, over the next 35 years, unfortunately, Katy had more encounters with law enforcement.

When a problem comes knocking on your door and you are fast asleep, you cannot run away for too long until the problem figuratively steps into your life. Once this happens, it will be difficult to resolve the issue, and this is what the book teaches its readers. What’s the point of regretting or apologizing, when you have not learned a lesson, and this teaches us to try not to knowingly make mistake in the first place. So, try not to be sorry and you will be saved from humiliation.

Take Control of Your Life = Don’t Be Complacent!

Now, here she was again. She was expecting to get away once again with community service, a fine to pay or maybe a couple of days in jail once the Judge would hear that she had 16 years of sobriety prior to this current incident.

Katy had become complacent, knowing that she had gotten away four times before that she would be able to do so again. Making mistakes and taking them lightly makes you inefficient and irrational.  Don’t take unnecessary risks in life because they might just end up in you losing control of your life.

Never in her wildest dreams could have Katy imagined that she would have to pay a hefty price for her actions. When Katy refused to breathe in the breathalyzer, she had to spend the night in the holding cell at the Sheriff’s station in the local county jail. However, being a licensed attorney, in the past, she was able to get herself out every time.

Had Katy learned the lessons of violating the law and being reckless, she would have never been to jail and wasted years of her life. Pamela teaches her readers an important lesson through this story. No one should have to experience incarceration. If you want to learn more, you should certainly read the book and avoid the mistakes that Katy made throughout her life Legal Eagle 90 Days In. Embracing Jail by Pamela Newman.
