What makes sensor technology a must for smart cities
2 min read

Sensor technology can help a city get alerts when there is a flood situation. Major disruptions owing to water logging can be prevented with the help of flood sensors.

Smart cities find sensor technology the ideal solution for solving traffic and transport woes. But NEC India's flood sensor technology also helps government agencies get the necessary alerts about an impending flood situation.

Heavy rains can wreak havoc in smart cities. The irrigation & flood control department and PWD, responsible for handling floods, can get alerts when the water level rises beyond the danger level.

These agencies can take specific emergency steps before the situation goes out of control. Pumps are put into operation to channel the flood water to rivers. These sensors are placed in drains to detect the water level.

Water-logging has become a recurring phenomenon in metropolitan cities. The main reason for this is that local bodies do not de-silt drains before the onset of monsoons.

Since it can save a smart city from water-logging, sensor technology is becoming a must. Besides water-logging, smart cities can also check pollution levels with the help of sensors.

Environment sensors provide the city authorities with data about the concentration of particulate matter. Precautionary steps can be taken to check the PM-2.5 and PM-10 levels. Dust suppressants and water sprinklers can be deployed on arterial roads.

As part of the graded response action plan, cities can also restrict construction activities. Given the large number of vehicles plying, smart cities can also resort to the odd-even formula, which will allow vehicles with odd registration numbers to ply on alternative days.

These sensors can be linked with a command and control center. The integrated command and control center allows city authorities to keep a round-the-clock watch on the flood and pollution situation.
