What to Do With a Smelly Drain

There are many reasons why you could have a smelly drain in your home. It’s always a problem because it can stink up the whole house and can be quite embarrassing when you have friends or family over. Don’t worry though because there are many ways to fix this common plumbing problem. Here are just some of the things that you can do:

1.Use hot water to clear the drain.

The smell could be due to accumulated drain. This is true, especially for kitchen sink drains. When you frequently pour used oil down the drain, this can happen. Many people think if they wash it down with water, the oil will get washed out as well. But since oil is viscous, it can get stuck in the drain pipes and harden up over time. This can lead to bacteria forming in the pipes, hence the smell.

Get hot water and pour it down the drain. Do this repeatedly until the drain properly expels water and you can’t smell the stink anymore.

2.Use distilled white vinegar and baking soda.

Baking soda has natural deodorizing properties. But when mixed with distilled white vinegar, it forms a chemical reaction that dislodges impurities in the drain and helps get rid of the residues that might have accumulated there.

Pour baking soda down the drain and then spray it with distilled white vinegar. Leave it there for a couple of minutes before washing it again with water.

3.Check the P-trap.

For the kitchen sink drain, you would want to check the P-trap for accumulated impurities. Bits and pieces of food stuck in the P-trap can rot and then cause a nasty smell over time. You can access the P-trap from under the kitchen sink.

Put a pail under the P-trap to catch the residues and excess water. Loosen up the P-trap and wash it properly. You can use detergent to wash and clean the P-trap.

4.Use a drain snake.

A drain snake delves deeper into the drain. It helps clear away accumulated particles that could be causing the smell.

5.Get your plumbing in Salmon Arm checked.
