Polyphonic sound marked a turning point for mobile device users in the early 2000s.

In the early 2000s, cell phones looked and sounded considerably different from today. Devices in those days were only permitted to have one tone or a few predetermined dzwonki na telefon, and these could not be changed. However, as time went on, this too would change.

The ringtone that Nokia equipment used to have was changed in 2002, when the brand was at the top of the market, to a music called "polyphonic," which is now the sound of modern cell phones.

From monophonic to polyphonic

The sound of cell phones at the turn of the century was known as monophonic sound, which meant that it could only play one note at a time to create the tone of a phone call. This is due to the low capacity of speakers on early cellphones.

Prior to his work at Nokia between 2000 and 2004, Ian Livingstone was dedicated to generating karaoke music backgrounds using MIDI files (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), the same type employed by cell phones for their monophonic tones.

Livingstone's task was to make the greatest of a poor situation, so he began transcribing available Nokia ringtones into polyphonic versions.

The first cell phones to have polyphonic sound were debuted in South Korea and became an international phenomenon. At that time, having a polyphonic phone wasn't just an option - it reflected social status among the general public.

What is a polyphonic ringtone

The pre-digital era's polyphonic tones, unlike the monophonic tone, were more sophisticated and used multiple 4 to 75-note phrases to produce more varied and elaborate sounds.

Polyphonic tones are created by a sequence technique that creates a rich, harmonic, and high-quality ringtone. Polyphonic ringtones produce superior sound quality and melodies because they mimic natural instruments by combining many instrument sounds together.

It would be like trying to compare the sound of a clarinet with that of an entire orchestra. Needless to say, there is a world of difference between the two.

Ringtone changes

Polyphony created not only a new type of ringtone, but also an additional main selling point for cell phones.

In fact, between 2002 and 2006, cell phone companies would advertise "polyphonic sound" as a way to make their phones stand out against the competition. This was a key factor in deciding whether or not customers purchased a particular model of phone.

From there, other businesses began to develop more sophisticated technology in order to compete with polyphony, and the sound of cell phones has now moved on to a point where the tones of cell phone calls are clearer than those from mobile phones prior to them.
