Who will pay if the dentist makes a mistake or fails

The vast majority of dentists are talented and do a good job, but sometimes things go wrong and the question then is who should pay - the dentist or the patient. Today, there are no rights for patients in dental care, which affects economically weak groups hard, says Ann-Marie Lidmark, chair of the Dental Health Association.

Root filling a cheek tooth costs between SEK 5,000 and 6,000, depending on how many root canals are to be filled again. In addition, will repair the tooth or put on a crown. If the dentist fails and the root canal needs to be redone or the tooth is extracted, the patient also pays that cost.

- People call Tf and ask if they really have to pay also for the replacement and extraction of the tooth, says Tf's chairman. Unfortunately, we can only confirm that the patient in dental care has no rights.

There must be guarantees of three years for crowns and bridges, but this is only a recommendation that dentists and the Swedish Consumer Agency have agreed upon. As a patient, you therefore always need to check the warranty period with the dentist before taking action. It is also good to know which insurance company the dentist has in case you later need to contact it.

A crown costs at least SEK 6,000 and for a bridge over a tooth gap the price is double. If remodeling is required and there is no insurance, the cost will be large for the individual, even if you are covered by the government's high-cost protection.

- Tf's experience is that the dentist is not always prepared to redo a crown or bridge if the patient is dissatisfied and believes it does not fit or if it cracks. A further complicating factor is that the patient has often lost trust in the dentist and then wants to turn to a new one.

In such cases, the patient must pay for the new crown or bridge himself, as the guarantee does not come with the new dentist. There is rarely any guarantee for composite fillings. The patient can possibly have it redone if it breaks or comes off within a few days, but if several weeks have passed, you have to pay for the redone yourself.

For those who are allergic to an inserted material, it is not obvious at all to be able to replace it free of charge. The only possibility is if the region pays the cost after the patient first provides evidence that he is allergic to the material. For this, sampling and a certificate from a doctor are required.

The patient's legal position, therefore, needs to be strengthened, according to Tf. However, one should be aware that there are difficulties in the presentation of evidence and often the dentist's word is against the patient's word. Some treatments are also unsafe, which includes root canals, which often fail.

The important thing is that there is a legal instance where the patient can try his case. Tf has previously proposed that dental care should be included in the Consumer Purchase Act, which would make it possible to appeal a treatment to the Consumer Ombudsman (KO). However, the political parties are doubtful about such an arrangement.

If dental care is included in the healthcare's high-cost protection, the issue may be resolved automatically as the patient will not suffer additional costs if the dentist fails.

- Regardless of which path the political parties choose, the dental patient's rights need to be strengthened, states the chairman of Tf. How Much Is A Root Canal Without Insurance?

Information about Tf

Dental Health Association (Tf) is a non-profit organization for patients in dental care and is a member of Funktionsrät Sweden. Tf works to ensure that dental care is included in healthcare's high-cost cover, as teeth are part of the body. Tf works for better and less toxic materials, for national guidelines for amalgam decontamination, removal of infections in the jawbone, and extraction of teeth, as well as for statutory patient information.

How much does dental insurance cost?

Dental insurance is designed to compensate the costs of dental care. Most policies cover preventive services, such as an oral exam, teeth cleaning and x-rays. More comprehensive dental insurance plans also include certain restorative or orthodontic needs, such as cavity fillings and braces.

The cost of dental care without insurance can be significant. However, depending on your anticipated needs and the type of dental care you choose, it is important to determine what type of coverage is best for you.

Here's what you need to know about the price of dental care, including different dental insurance costs, the factors that affect them, and what you typically get to pay them.

Important takeaways

  • The cost of dental care can be high, but insurance doesn't always save you money. You must assess your dental care needs to determine if the cost of the coverage is worth it.
  • Dental insurance costs come in five types: premiums, deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and annual maximums. Include them all in your considerations.
  • Total dental insurance costs vary between policies and states, but you can expect to pay about $529 to $606 per year on average.

Dental insurance costs

While there is no way to know exactly what you will spend on dental insurance in any given year, there are ways to estimate it. For example, in 2020, total dental care spending in the United States was $142.4 billion. The US has a population of roughly 332 million according to the latest figures, so that averages out to about $428 per consumer.

Another useful data point is the latest study released by the American Dental Association, which found that if you had dental insurance in 2015, you could expect to spend about $453 to $520 including premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Adjusted for inflation, that would be about $529 to $606 in 2021 dollars.Ultimately, your actual annual costs depend on several factors, such as your dental needs, location, and policy type.

Dental insurance costs come from five sources: premiums, deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and annual maximums. Here's how each one works, as well as what you can expect to pay for them.

Premiere

Premiums are the monthly or annual payments you make to an insurance provider to maintain your coverage. Here are some 2022 samples from zip codes within the following counties that use the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace:

  • Travis County, Texas$8.93 to $63.07/month
  • Hawaii County, Hawaii$18.06 to $52.06/month
  • Saint Johns County, Florida: $7.95 to $44.24/month

Costs fluctuate within states due to coverage variations and between states due to cost of living differences.

Deductibles

Deductibles are the amount you must contribute to your services annually before your insurance will help with the rest. Here are the 2022 dental deductions for the same areas listed above:

  • Travis County, Texas: $0 to $60
  • Hawaii County, Hawaii: $0 to $75
  • Saint Johns County, Florida: $0 to $150

Deductibles usually have an inverse relationship with premiums, meaning policies with higher deductibles have lower premiums and vice versa. Some dental plans have no deductible.

Copays

Copays are fees you may have to pay out of pocket when you visit your dentist that correlate to the price of the service. For example, many policies offer preventive services at no cost, but 20% to 50% payment for a root canal procedure. This means that for root canals costing $1,500, you could be responsible for a copay of $300 to $750.
