Why Even New Cars Need Brake Maintenance?

Why Even New Cars Need Brake Maintenance?
3 min read

When we get a new car, we often believe it means fewer trips to the mechanic. However, let's take the example of a 2015 Mazda 6 with only 27,000 miles on it, which needed new rear brake pads and brake rotors. Surprising, right? Let's understand why this happened.

Why Brake Pads Aren't Always the Culprit:

Upon observation of the picture presented above, it is discernible that the rear brake rotors have undergone rusting, most likely due to prolonged periods of the car being parked. During its initial year, the car was left outside in London, Ontario, which subjected it to water and snow during rainstorms or snowfall.

Normally, the entire flat surface area of the brake rotors should exhibit a shiny appearance resulting from the brake pads pressing against them. However, as the picture portrays, at least half of the surface area has succumbed to rusting, indicating that the brake pads did not make proper contact with this section. Therefore, the rear brakes only operated at approximately half their potential capacity. This, in turn, exerted additional pressure on the front brakes, which could eventually lead to further complications.

The Power of Regular Inspections:

During the client's previous visit to our shop six months ago, an oil change service was performed, and the brakes were inspected. At that time, the brakes were found to be in good working condition. However, as time passes, wear and tear on the brake pads and rotors can occur, which can eventually lead to brake failure. This is why having your vehicle inspected regularly, at least twice a year, is essential to catch any potential problems before they become more severe.

Fortunately, the client brought their vehicle in for an oil change before embarking on a long road trip, which was wise. During the inspection, we discovered that the front brakes and rotors were worn out and needed to be replaced. Our skilled mechanics were able to replace the brakes and rotors within two hours, ensuring the safety of the client's family during their journey. By addressing the issue promptly, we were also able to prevent further damage to the front brake pads, which could have resulted in the need for more extensive repairs in the future.

Conclusion:

If it's been a while since your vehicle had an oil change or safety inspection, scheduling an appointment is a good idea. Regular check-ups can catch issues early, ensuring your car stays in good shape and keeping you safe on the road.
