Why has car catalytic converter theft grown in popularity?

Compared to other auto parts like the computer, this component is much simpler to disassemble. The catalytic converter is another component of the engine that is increasingly being stolen when it comes to auto parts.

This trend is the result of two factors: the first is that this piece is extremely vulnerable because it can be removed without opening the chest, and the second is the rise in the price of metals.

The theft of a catalytic converter is simpler than that of a computer because it can be done without opening the hood and because it can be done from the lower part of the car with relative ease.

What is a catalytic converter?

It's a momentous part of a car's eco-friendly performance, as they collect harmful gases in the exhaust, such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, and convert it into less harmful emissions like carbon dioxide and water vapor.

For such a process, it contains a chemical catalyst (usually precious metals, such as platinum and rhodium), ceramic or metallic carrier materials, housing and various regulating devices.

Why are catalytic converters stolen?

Specifically, rhodium, platinum, and palladium, all of which have high value, are used to make catalytic converters. They become a target for thieves as a result.

A catalytic converter that has been stolen can be sold on the black market or by the kilogramme. The latter option has gained popularity because metal prices have skyrocketed over the past 12 months. For instance, a gramme of platinum costs about 700 pesos, and rhodium fluctuates between 12,000 and 14,000 pesos.7
